- He was inspired by his brother to take up hockey.
- In 2008, the news channel Aaj Tak conducted a sting operation on Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) secretary K Jothikumaran and took Lalit Kumar Upadhyay’s name as bait.
- Although the sting operation resulted in the suspension of K Jothikumaran, It brought defamation to Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, even though the channel admitted that Lalit wasn’t involved in the sting operation and his name was used only to trick the official.
- The defamation resulted in a brief pause in the growth of Lalit’s career who was selected for India’s under-21 team just before the sting video’s release.
- He has trained at the SAI (Sports Authority of India) Training Centre in Varanasi.
- During his youth, he played at a hockey ground created by Tej Bahadur Singh in Karampur village, near Varanasi.
- Lalit credits Tej Bahadur for taking care of his school fees and education while also helping him focus on his hockey career.
- In 2010, Dhanraj Pillay noticed him and offered him a contract to play with Air India.
