- After the partition of India, Nisha Kohli and her family moved to India from Sialkot in Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan).
- She was a diligent student at school and attended typing classes in the evenings.
- Later she got offers from the film industry for acting and in 1955, she acted in the Hindi film Pagal Khana. The film was unreleased.
- She appeared in supporting roles in Hindi films such as Miss India (1957), Phagun (1958), Chaalbaaz (1958), and Parakh (1960).
- Her debut Punjabi language film, Bhangra (1959), was a huge commercial success, and after that, she appeared in lead roles in the Punjab film industry.
- She acted in several Punjabi language films including Jija Ji (1961), Guddi (1961), Pind Di Kurhi (1963), Main Jatti Punjab Di (1964), and Dulla Bhatti (1966).
- She was one of the first actors in the Punjab film industry to play a double role in the national award-winning film, Satluj De Kandhe (1964).
