Some Lesser Known Facts About Poonam Muttreja

When Poonam Muttreja was 18 years old, she once visited Zamrudpur, near Lady Shri Ram College in New Delhi, as a student and NSS volunteer.

There, she saw that leather artisans were making bags for just Rs. 5 each, and she felt surprised that their skills were not valued, and they were paid very low.

She then started visiting more often to learn about their lives. According to her, being Dalits, they faced untouchability, which added more problems in their lives.

She once narrated more memories related to this event during a media conversation. She said,
This was in the early 70s. I began working in one such leather factory to learn how to cut patterns and understand all about leather. I even visited the Central Leather Research Institute in Chennai to understand the way the material and industry worked.”

She then started buying leather and teaching new patterns and designs for the bags to these artisans. She then met Fabindia’s founder, John Bissell, to get cheap fabric.

John introduced her to Aruna Roy, who co-founded Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan.

She then started working with Aruna Roy, who taught her about rural needs and grassroots work.

She received new ideas about cooperatives and started working again with the leather artisans.

She took the help of BB Bhasin, who is known for the Gujarat State Handicrafts Corporation (GURJARI) and Cottage Industries Emporiums.

In 1977, together, they organised a craft bazaar at Triveni Kala Sangam, which later changed into Dastkar, a name suggested by LC Jain to honour craftspersons.
