At the age of 10, his father passed away. His family faced various financial difficulties after his father’s demise. His mother then started a small daily needs shop to meet the financial expenses.

When he turned 18, he took up his father’s job in the Kolkata Police. While he was posted there, he joined the orchestra of the Kolkata Police.

His senior Zulfiqar Hasan (Special ACP) in Kolkata Police Station supported him to participate in the singing reality TV show Indian Idol 3 (2007). He finished as the winner of the show. On winning, he won Rs 1 crore and a Maruti Suzuki SX4 car.

A few days later, on Red FM Delhi, during a live broadcast, an RJ said that “shopkeepers will now have to make their own security arrangements as Gorkhas have taken to singing” hinting towards Tamang. The Gorkhas got furious over the comment and protested at various places. They demanded that the RJ should be fired from the radio station. Later, the radio channel made a public apology on behalf of the RJ.

After winning Indian Idol, he released a few Nepali music albums like Dhanyavad (2007), Namaste (2016), and Dhadkan Bhitra (2024).
