- His father, Yogendra Singh Chauhan, was associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Jan Sangh. Yogendra went to jail during the ban on the RSS in 1948 and later became a district-level worker of the Jan Sangh. Yogendra was also jailed during the Emergency. He spent much of his life working for the political organisation.

- In 1990, Ram Pratap Singh Chauhan became active in politics during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
- In 1991, he was appointed as the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Mandal President in Agra. He served in the position until 1994.
