Some Lesser Known Facts About Randhir Singh
- Randhir Singh was born in the royal family of Patiala which was deeply associated with Indian sport.
- His father Bhalindra Singh was a member of the International Olympic Committee and President of the Indian Olympic Association.
- His uncle Yadavindra Singh played a key role in organising the first Asian Games in Delhi in 1951.
- He was introduced to the sport by his aunt at an early age.
- Singh made his competitive senior debut as an eighteen-year-old when he was part of the winning trap shooting team at the Indian National Championships in 1964.
- He competed in the mixed trap event in five Olympic Games for India.
- He won the gold medal in the trap event in the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games and was the first Indian shooter to win a gold at the Asian Games.
- He started his sports administration career in 1984 when he was elected as Joint Secretary of the Indian Olympic Association.
- Singh last participated in an international shooting competition at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima. It was at this meeting that he was the first to participate in the Asian Games as an office bearer of a continental sports organisation.
- The same year, he decided to stop competing in shooting.
- In 2003, his sister Padmesh Kumari was shot in a circuit house in Shimla by Dhirendra Walia, one of the caretakers of his farmhouse ‘Shanti Farms’ at Chattarpur, New Delhi.
- After an argument, Walia fired at her. He was arrested within hours, by police. At that time, Randhir Singh was in London.
- Singh was instrumental in the organising of the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010 and was the Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Games.
- He was elected as a Member of the International Olympic Committee in 2001 at the 112th Session of the IOC in Moscow and was the top voted of all the candidates.
- He was an IOC member until 2014 and honorary member since then. Singh has been the Secretary General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) from 2008 to 2015 and Life Vice President of OCA from 2015 to 2021.
- The body’s 44th General Assembly elected him as the President of the Olympic Council of Asia in September 2024, which marked his first time in the role, and the first Indian to do so.
- He was elected to a four-year term, but never served it out because of poor health.
- In his old age, Singh suffered a brain stroke and was unable to be cured. He passed away at his home in New Delhi around 10:30 am on 27 May 2026. The funeral was held at Haridwar the next day.
- He is survived by his wife Vinita and daughters Mahima, Sunaina and Rajeshwari.
- Former president of Punjab Shooting Association Gurbir Singh Sandhu, who is also the father of former world champion Manavjit Sandhu, said it was a big blow to shooting sport and the Olympic movement.
