Controversies | Accused of corruption for acquiring coal blocks In September 2022, the CBI registered a case against the companies of RP-Sanjiv Goenka group including RPG Industries, RPG Enterprises and Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) Limited on charges of corruption, cheating, and criminal conspiracy for acquiring coal blocks during 1993-1995. Before 2012, the Central Vigilance Commission was handling the case. After the preliminary enquiry made by CBI, it was found that RPG Group and CESC had provided wrong information to Coal Ministry about the actual company that would construct and operate the powerplants at Sarisatoli, Tara West, and Deocha Pachami. Later, the CBI revealed that both the companies applied interchangeably in 1995 to get clearance from the Rajasthan government for acquiring coal mines in Dholpur, Rajasthan. [1]NDTV Criticized for misbehaving with cricketers In May 2024, he was caught into a controversy after a video went viral on the internet in which he was seen scolding KL Rahul in the stadium, after the defeat of LSG by Sunrisers Hyderabad. Many netizens reacted on it and criticized Goenka’s behaviour. Some expert commentators also said that these kind of conversation should not be taken place in public place or “should be happening behind closed doors.” Sanjiv Goenka was also noticed having an animated conversation with MS Dhoni in 2017, when Goenka was the chairman of Rising Pune Supergiant team. He also removed Dhoni from the captaincy and appointed Steve Smith for the position at that time. |
