Some Lesser Known Facts About Sukant Kadam
- When he was 10 years old, he fell on the ground and suffered a severe injury to his left knee.
- Despite several surgeries, he was permanently disabled due to his injury.
- Based on doctors’ advice, he avoided playing any sport after the injury and focused only on his studies.
- He started playing badminton while studying in college.
- After watching Paralympian Girisha Nagarajegowda win the silver medal in the high jump at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, he became inspired to take up badminton as a serious sport.
- He was rejected from his college’s badminton team due to his disability. This rejection motivated him to prepare for para-badminton events.
- In 2013, he participated in a tournament organized by the Rotary Club and won. This was his first experience as a para-badminton shuttler.
- In 2015, he started working as a badminton coach at Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy.
- He plays badminton in the SL4 category, one of 6 para-badminton categories, as his movement is affected only on one side of his body.
- In 2019, while playing in Turkey, he suffered from severe stomach pain and was diagnosed with appendicitis but he avoided getting surgery. In 2023, he got surgery for appendicitis as his pain became unbearable.
- He trained indoors and focused on his mental strength with his mental trainer Gayatri Varthak due to COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
