Controversies	• In December 2017, while addressing a press conference, Badruddin Ajmal misbehaved and threatened a journalist who asked him if he would form an alliance with the BJP or the INC, after the 2017 Assam Legislative Assembly Election. Later that day, the journalist lodged an FIR against Badruddin after which Badruddin issued an apology. • Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is a three-term parliamentarian from Assam’s Dhubri and the president of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Apart from politics, he is also one of the richest Indian politicians and the owner of the Ajmal Group of Companies. He is also known for his contributions to charitable hospitals, orphanages, and educational institutions for which he has been listed in The 500 Most Influential Muslims, an annual publication which ranks the most influential Muslims in the world.

• Maulana Badruddin’s father, Haji Ajmal Ali, was a rice farmer who went to Mumbai in the 1950s and went on to build a perfume empire by the brand name “Ajmal Perfumes.” Badruddin brothers inherited their father’s fortune, the Ajmal Group of Companies, and took it to new heights by expanding its business in various sectors including oil and textile.

• Badruddin became active in Assam’s politics after establishing his political party, Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) in 2005. The AUDF, a party which was established just six months prior to the election, went on to win 10 seats in the 2006 assembly elections.

• The margin of seats increased in 2011 Assam Assembly polls, as Ajmal’s party won 18 seats in large and Muslim-majority constituencies.

• He eventually gained stature after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, wherein his party won three out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam. His brother, Mohammad Sirajuddin Ajmal, was also one of the three members of parliament who won on the ticket of AIUDF.
