Some Lesser Known Facts About Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos is considered one of the greatest midfielders of all time.

Apart from his assists, he is known for his striking ability, especially from long range.

Kroos is known for his calm and composed playing style.

His father, Roland, was the coach of Hansa Rostock in the lower leagues of Germany for several years.

Toni was initially coached by his father. Toni once said,

My father was 50 percent father and 50 percent coach.”

In an interview, Kroose revealed that his father was very strict as a coach, which affected the father-son relationship.

While studying at school in Evershagen, he was made to play football barefoot.

Toni Kroos first started playing for the local club Greifswalder SC, later transferring to the youth team of Hansa Rostock.

In 2006, he joined Bayern at the age of 16. By 2007-08, he was promoted to the first team.

When Kroos made his Bayern debut in September 2007, he became the club’s youngest-ever player (aged 17 years and 265 days). David Alaba later broke this record in 2010.

Kroos was picked a year early for Under-17 and helped Germany win bronze in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup; Kroos was named tournament MVP.

On 5 November 2008, Kroos made his UEFA Champions League; he came as a substitute against Fiorentina in the 79th minute of the game.

In January 2009, he was loaned to Bayer Leverkusen, where he established himself as a regular.

In July 2014, Kroos joined Real Madrid, becoming the ninth German player to join the club.

Before joining Real Madrid, Manchester United manager David Moyes reportedly approached Kroos to join Manchester United; however, Moyes was later sacked, and the new manager Louis van Gaal didn’t sign Kroos.

When Germany won the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Toni Kroos was missing in the group photo with Angela Merkel. When asked why he was missing in the photo, Kroos replied,

Inside I’m as happy as anyone in that photo, but I’m not the type of person to show it on the outside. I don’t miss this photo in my collection. I don’t need to be in the centre of the celebrations.”

After Germany was eliminated from UEFA Euro 2020 in 2021, Toni Kroos announced his retirement from international football due to his poor performance in the tournament. In 2024, he came out of retirement and played in the Euro 2024.

As a midfielder, Kroos helped Real Madrid win the Champions League in 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2021-22, becoming the only German player to win the competition on more occasions.

On 30 October 2022, he received the first red card in his professional career in a 1-1 draw against Girona.

In June 2023, he extended his contract with Real Madrid for a year until June 2024.
