Some Lesser Known Facts About Basavaraj Bommai
- Basavaraj Bommai completed his formal education and started working in the Pune division of Tata Motors. After working for three years, he decided to go independent and became an industrialist.
- Bommai followed in his father’s footsteps and began his political career with the Janata Dal party in 1998. However, the party began dissolving gradually in 1999, and he became a part of the Janata Dal (United) party, the merger of the Sharad Yadav faction of the Janata Dal, the Lok Shakti Party, and the Samta Party, in 2003. From there, he was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from the Dharwad constituency.
- In 2008, Bommai decided to leave Janata Dal (United) party and joined Bharatiya Janata Party. After the Karnataka state elections, he was elected as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, where he represented the Shiggaon constituency, Haveri.
- Amid the political turmoil in Karnataka, Basavaraj Bommai witnessed the change of three Chief Ministers while keeping the same ministry i.e. Ministry for Water Resources. It was reported that Bommai was close to the former Karnataka Chief Minister B. S. Yediyurappa.
- During B. S. Yediyurappa’s fourth term as the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Bommai served as the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Minister of Cooperation, and the Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs. He was also the Minister-in-charge of the Haveri and Udupi districts.
- B. S. Yediyurappa resigned from his position as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 26 July 2021, and the superior leaders of BJP sent their senior leaders, G. Kishan Reddy and Dharmendra Pradhan, to choose the next CM. On 27 July 2021, Basavaraj Bommai was elected for the post, and on 28th July 2021, he was sworn as the 23rd Chief Minister of Karnataka. After assuming the office, he held a cabinet meeting where he announced scholarships for the children of farmers, and he also increased the pension of widows, physically challenged, and senior citizens. B. S. Yediyurappa posted a tweet on his Twitter account to wish Bommai good luck for his term as the CM.

- Bommai follows the Lingayat religious views, and his selection as the Chief Minister of Karnataka was planned by Yediyurappa to maintain their hold on thirteen percent of the population that followed the Lingayat religious beliefs. Out of the 23 Chief Ministers since 1956, fourteen chief ministers of Karnataka were from the Lingayat community.
- Basavaraj Bommai is the son of the 11th Chief Minister of Karnataka, Somappa Rayappa Bommai. SR Bommai was the founder of Janata Dal (United) and Basavaraj Bommai was appointed as the general secretary in the party in 1995.
- Several BJP ministers have described Bommai as a calm and composed person. Further, they said that Bommai was someone who would understand the issues deeply and completely before taking decisions.
- Basavaraj Bommai is an animal lover, and he had a pet dog named Sunny. An old video of his family mourning Sunny’s death resurfaced on the internet in July 2021.
