Some Lesser Known Facts About Jagadish Shettar

  • Jagadish Shettar was a member of the Akhila Bharatha Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) from his college days and later became a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing, Hindu nationalist, paramilitary, volunteer organization.

  • In 1999, the BJP high command preferred the appointment of Shettar over senior BJP leader B.B. Shivappa as the Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. This decision did not go well among the Shivappa’s supporters, and in response, they vandalised the party office where Shettar was appointed as the Leader of the Opposition. The BJP expelled B.B. Shivappa from the party on the charges of indiscipline.
  • His uncle, Sadashiva Shettar, was a former Member of the Legislative Assembly from Hubli Constituency in Karnataka and he contested in the 1967 Mysore Legislative Assembly election on a ticket of the Jan Sangh party and became one of the first Jan Sangh leaders who got elected in the Karnataka State assembly elections in 1967.
  • Some reports suggested that the veteran politician was not in full agreement with the party leadership’s decision when they appointed him as the 18th Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly; he remained in the chair for nearly one and a half years and in November 2009, he became the Minister of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj in the B. S. Yediyurappa ministry.

  • His father, Shivappa Shivamurthappa Shettar, was consecutively elected as a member of the Hubli-Dharwad City Corporation for five terms. Shivamurthappa Shettar was the first Mayor of the Jan Sangh party in Southern India and he passed away on 31 January 2011. The SS Shettar Foundation in Hubballi, Karnataka, was founded by the politician in memory of his late father.
  • In 2012, he was appointed as the 15th Chief Minister of Karnataka by the high command of the BJP to put an end to the attempts of different factions to weaken the unity of the party ahead of the 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election; Shettar was the third person to be appointed as the Chief Minister by the BJP between 2008 and 2012.

  • In 2014, his son, Prashant Shettar, got married to the granddaughter of veteran Congress leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa.
  • His brother, Pradeep Shettar, became a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council in 2016; Pradeep was a member of the BJP.
  • In 2017, his son, Sankalp Shettar, got married to the daughter of the former Minister of State of Railways Suresh Angadi and the Belgaum Lok Sabha constituency MP Mangal Suresh Angadi; Shradha Sankalp Shetter was on the board of directors of the Angadi School of Architecture (ASA), Belagavi, Karnataka.

  • On 10 January 2020, his mother, Basavannemma Shivappa Shettar, passed away.
  • In 2020, the Hubballi Dharwad City District Congress Committee members filed a complaint against Sankalp Shettar, and the then Hubballi Dharwad East Constituency BJP President Prabhuraj Navalgundmath. The Congress workers pointed out that both the accused did not hold any government positions nor any constitutional authority to distribute the food and other essential kits which were sponsored by the Infosys Foundation to the Dharwad administration.   • On 19 March 2023, Jagadish organized the first Hubballi Ugadi Utsav (festival) coordinating with the SS Shettar Foundation and other benefactors.

  • Shettar was one of the top veteran leaders in the Karnataka BJP after Yeddyurappa announced his retirement from electoral politics in 2022; however, Jagadish was asked to retire from electoral politics by the party leadership and was not given a party ticket to contest in the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election. Following this he left the BJP and lambasted the Karnataka BJP for humiliating him by denying him a party ticket at the last moment.

  • Following Shettar’s exit from the BJP, in an interview, the BJP’s Parliamentary board member B. S. Yediyurappa heavily criticised the veteran politician and pointed out that his exit from the party and his decision to resign as the MLA of the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency was an unforgivable crime.
  • Some reports suggested that the BJP high command offered him a position in the Union Council of Ministers and also allowed him to pick the candidate to represent the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency in Karnataka; however, the veteran leader rejected their offer and insisted that he would either join another party or contest in the election as an independent candidate.
  • On 17 April 2023, he joined the Indian National Congress (INC) after leaving the BJP a day earlier; he represented the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency as a BJP candidate for nearly 30 years. In 2023, he was fielded by the Indian National Congress from the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency.

  • On 19 April 2023, he filed his nomination as an INC candidate from the Hubli-Dharwad Central constituency for the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election.
