Some Lesser Known Facts About K. Sanjay Murthy

K. Sanjay Murthy grew up in a bureaucrat family in Andhra Pradesh.

His father, KSR Murthy, was an IAS officer who rose to the level of Secretary to Govt of India. He was also a politician and served as a Congress MP from Amlapuram in 1996. He was also briefly associated with megastar Chiarnjeevi’s now-dissolved Praja Rajyam party.

After completing his graduation, Sanjay Murthy appeared for the UPSC Civil Service Examination. He cleared the examination in 1988 and was appointed as an IAS officer in 1989.

From 11 December 1989 to 10 August 1991, Sanjay was on training at a junior scale.

As an IAS officer, Murthy served his state (Himachal Pradesh) and centre in the fields of energy and education.

From 1991 to 2002, Sanjay served the Government of Himachal Pradesh in various capacities including Assistant Commissioner, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Additional Director, and Managing Director.

He held the post of Deputy Commissioner in three districts of Himachal Pradesh, namely, Lahaul & Spiti, Chamba, and Solan.

Between the years 2002 to 2007, Murthy was on central deputation, where he worked in the Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ministry of Communications and IT.

Later, he worked for three years at the National Institute for Smart Government (NISG), Hyderabad.

After returning to Himachal Pradesh in 2007, Sanjay was appointed as the MD of Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation.

He then worked in the departments of Primary Education, Higher Education and Technical Education in Himachal Pradesh for two years.

Sanjay has also held the post of Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Transport, Housing and Urban Development in the state.

He again went on central deputation in 2014 and joined the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

In 2018, he was transferred to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, where he looked after the matters of the Delhi Development Authority and Urban Transport.

He also served as the director on the board of NBCC India Limited.

Later, he was posted as the Secretary of the Department of Higher Education in the Ministry of Education. During his term, he was responsible for overseeing policies related to higher education, ensuring the implementation of government initiatives, and collaborating with educational institutions to promote educational development across the country.

His tenure was set to end on 31 December 2024. However, on 18 November 2024, President Droupadi Murmu appointed him as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

He replaced Girish Chandra Murmu as the CAG, becoming the first Telugu man to achieve the feat.

He is fluent in three languages- Hindi, English, and Telugu.
