  • Prasenjit Bose was born and raised in Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • Being an economist, he is an expert in macroeconomics, finance, and political economy.
  • He has been engaged in politics and social work since he was a student at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
  • While Bose was in the JNU, he was one of the CPI(M)-supported Students’ Federation of India (SFI)’s best-known strategists. He became renowned for his political views and thinking, and was so recognized that even his ABVP competitors knew him as the “brain behind the JNU SFI”.
  • After obtaining a Doctorate in Economics, Bose decided on social activism and politics as his professional life.
  • In 2005, he was a full-time member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI (M).
  • After approximately 2007, he began to dissent with several CPI (M) choices, including land acquisition in Bengal in 2007 and the firing by police at Nandigram in 2008. Although he continued working for the CPI until 2012.
  • He resigned from CPI (M) in 2012 and wrote a resignation letter in which he protested against CPI to favor the Congress-led UPA’s presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee. He also termed the move a “grave error” that went against the party’s political line. The following day, CPI(M) turned down his resignation and threw him out of the party.
  • His wife, Albina Shakeel, was also a Delhi State Committee member of the CPI (M) (Communist Party of India (Marxist)). Shortly after his protest, she quit the party as well.
  • At the time of his resignation from the CPI (M), he was the head of the party’s research team.
  • After that, Prasenjit Bose remained away from politics for over a decade and was an active social activist. Some of his key activism drives were against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and land takings for coal mine projects like the Deocha Pachami project in Birbhum district of West Bengal.
  • In 2014, he criticised the Indian National Congress. In one of his articles, he wrote,

Being in power at the Centre for a decade, the Congress has done everything possible to discredit itself and alienate the people. Whatever little redistribution of resources was attempted through the NREGA, Food Security Bill, etc was more than undone through the relentless rise in food and fuel prices under Congress rule, which hit the poor the hardest. The erroneous policy of hiking interest rates to curb inflation failed to check rising prices and choked off investment and economic activity instead.”

  • In September 2025, Bose announced that he had joined the Indian National Congress. On 14 September 2025, he wrote on Facebook,

“I have decided to join the Indian National Congress in West Bengal on Monday, September 15, along with fellow activists. Our immediate objective is to strengthen the democratic movement and rebuild progressive alternatives at the Centre and in West Bengal. The UPA government and the Congress was in a state of decline while their policies had also become quite unpopular.”
