Some Lesser Known Facts About D. Y. Patil
- D.Y. Patil was born in Ambap village of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra into a farming family.
- He completed his schooling at Alphonso School in Kolhapur and developed an interest in public service from a young age.
- In 1957, Patil entered active politics as a candidate of Indian National Congress and was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council, where he served until 1962.
- After completing his term in the Kolhapur Municipal Council, he continued working in public life and social service.
- In 1967, Patil was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Panhala Assembly Constituency as a Congress candidate.
- In 1972, he was re-elected as the MLA from Panhala.
- In 1984, after his active legislative career, he established the first institutions under the D.Y. Patil group, offering a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, and later expanded into medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, management, architecture, biotechnology, agriculture and several other fields.
- In 1985, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy from the World University Round Table, Arizona, United States for his contribution to education and social services.
- In 1988, Patil was awarded with another Honorary Doctorate by Arizona University, United State, for his contribution to higher education.
- In 1991, D.Y. Patil received the Padma Shri, for his contribution to social work and education.
- In 1996, he received an Honorary Doctorate in Philosophy by Nottingham Trent University, Nottingham, England.
- In 2000s, under his leadership, the D.Y.Patil Group expanded into one of India’s leading educational organisations with universties, medical colleges, engineering colleges, hospitals, research centres and schhols in Maharashtra and other parts of the country.
- In 2009, D.Y. Patil was appointed as the Governor of Tripura and took oath on 27 November 2009.
- In 2012, Patil received the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (D. Litt. Honoris Causa) from the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar for his contribution to education and society.
- In 2013, he was appointed as the Governor of Bihar and took oath on 22 March 2013.
- In 2014, while serving as the Governor of Bihar, he also held the additional charge of Governor of West Bengal from 3 July 2014 to 17 July 2014.
- In 2015, D. Y. Patil was awarded with the honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) by Shivaji University, Kolhapur, for his remarkable contribution as an educationist and philanthropist.
- In 2018, after spending several decades with the Indian National Congress, he joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on 24 December 2018.
- In 2020s, under the guidance of D.Y. Patil, the D.Y. Patil grew into one of India’s largest private educational networks, with more than 180 institutions, universities, hospitals, and research centres serving students from India and abroad.
- On 4 August 2026, D.Y. Patil passed away at his residence in Kasba Bawda, Kolhapur after a prolonged illness.
