Some Lesser Known Facts About Amol Muzumdar
- Amol Muzumdar is an Indian cricketer and coach. He is considered one of those batsmen who never played for the Indian team despite scoring more than 10,000 runs in the domestic circuit. He has given coaching to many teams.
- His father and uncles used to play amateur cricket which generated an interest towards cricket in him. His father enrolled him at Ramakant Achrekar’s training academy at the age of ten; Achrekar also coached many other talented cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Chandrakant Pandit, Lalchand Rajput, Pravin Amre, and Vinod Kambli.
- In the 1987-88 season, he started playing for the Shardashram Vidyamandir International School team. On his Ranji debut against Haryana, he made 260 runs which was the highest first-class debut score at that time. He also captained Mumbai in many seasons and led them to capture 7 Ranji titles. He played for Mumbai for 20 years.
- Amol was appointed as the vice-captain of the India Under-19 during the 1994 season. He also played alongside Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly while playing for India A during the 1994-95 season.
- From September 2009 to the 2011 domestic season, he played for Assam. From October 2011 to December 2013, he played for Andhra Pradesh. Amol retired from all forms of cricket on 25 October 2014.
- He was the highest run-scorer in the domestic first-class season when he retired in 2014; a record which was later broken by Wasim Jaffer, another Mumbai batsman.
- When he was playing in the Netherlands in 2013, there were speculations that he might play for the national team of the Netherlands; however, in October 2013, he became the batting coach of the Netherlands for the 2015 World Cup Qualifier tournament.
- From 2018 to 2021 IPL (Indian Premier League) seasons, he worked as the batting coach of the Rajasthan Royals. When the South African national team toured India in September 2019, he became their batting coach. - Several people have criticised BCCI’s selection policy in regard to Amol as he was never selected for India. Some people claim that he was never selected due to his Assamese descent. Amol talked about this in an interview and said that due to the Fab 4 group comprising Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, and Sourav Ganguly, he did not get the chance to play in the international matches for India.
- Amol was considering retirement in 2002 as he thought that he would not get any chance to play for India; however, Amol’s father persuaded him to play for the teams in England following which he got his passion back and kept on playing for 10 more years.
- He has also worked as a guest on cricket discussion shows and commentator in different leagues.
