• D.Y. Patil was born in Ambap village of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra into a farming family.

• He completed his schooling at Alphonso School in Kolhapur and developed an interest in public service from a young age.

• In 1957, Patil entered active politics as a candidate of Indian National Congress and was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council, where he served until 1962.
