  • While growing up, David Willey idolised his father and wanted to follow in his footsteps.
  • In an interview, he revealed that his academy coach once told him that he was not good enough to play professional cricket following which he worked very hard to prove him wrong.

  • He started playing professional cricket for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and played his first game against Leicestershire, one of the clubs his father played for, in 2009.
  • Initially, he was a lower-order batsman who could swing the new ball.
  • David was dismissed for a golden duck while executing a poor shot against Essex in his first One Day game.
  • He took his first wicket in the form of Phil Edwards when he bowled him LBW out in his second first-class match.
  • In 2010, Willey appeared in Brain vs Brawn, a Cricket AM feature, along with his Northants teammate Jack Brooks.
  • In 2012, he made an impressive performance by taking 43 wickets for Northamptonshire in the Friends Life T20 competition.

  • After making his ODI debut against Ireland in May 2015, he scored a century for his home county, Northamptonshire, against Sussex in the Natwest T20 Blast.

  • In 2018, he made his IPL debut for Chennai Superkings; he replaced an injured Kedar Jadhav in the tournament.
