Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar is a Laparoscopic Oncosurgeon who works in India and overseas.

Shailesh Puntambekar served as a Junior Resident in General Surgery at Sassoon General Hospital in Pune from 1986 to 1987. In 1987, he was promoted to the position of Senior Resident in General Surgery. He served in the position till 1988.

In 1988, he began working as its Chief Resident in General Surgery.

Shailesh Puntambekar served as a Junior Registrar in Oncosurgery at Tata Hospital in Mumbai, India, from 1988 to 1990.

From 1991 to 1993, he served as a Senior Registrar in Oncosurgery at Tata Hospital in Pune.

In 1993, Shailesh Puntambekar began working as a Consultant Oncosurgery at KEM Hospital in Pune.

Once, a little boy with eye cancer needed surgery and came to Shailesh Puntambekar who had no other option but to perform the surgery that would leave him blind to save his life. In 2004, the Marathi movie “Shwaas” was based on this surgery.

Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar is a reviewer for many scientific journals including JMIG (Journal Of Minimally Invasive Gynaecology), Elsevier Editorial System, International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Minimal Access Journal (IAGES), Video journal of advanced laparoscopic surgery (Netherlands), and European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR).

He has contributed more than 80 articles to many noted international and national journals. Some of his articles include Laparoscopic Transvesical Approach to Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) Repair, Indian Experience of Robotics in Gynaecology, and Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy in the Elderly.

Apart from being a doctor, Shailesh Puntambekar is a noted author who has published many books such as Atlas of Laparoscopic Surgery in Gynaecologic Oncology (2006), Chapter in ‘Laparoscopic Gynaecological Procedures’ (2009), Chapter in Manual of Laparoscopy: Laparoscopic Pelvic Anatomy (2013).

In May 2010, Shailesh Puntambekar was appointed as an Honourary Professor at Complutense University of Madrid, Spain.

He is the first Indian to perform Robotic Esophageal Surgery.

Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar has shared live surgeries in over 12 countries. These surgeries are presented twice at AAGL (American Association of Gynaecological Laparoscopy).
