His father was a manager of his hometown club SC Borgfeld.
He also started his football journey with SC Borgfeld.
He then joined the youth academy of VfL Wolfsburg.
In 2014, he joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen during the January Transfer Window.
On 15 August 2015, he scored his first goal for Bayer 04 Leverkusen against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
He had a great goalscoring form between 20 March to 30 April 2016. He became the youngest player since Gerd Müller to score in six consecutive Bundesliga matches.
He has represented Germany in U-15, U-16, U-17, U-19, U-21 events. He made his senior international debut on 21 May 2016, against Mexico.
The 2016-2017 Season brought him into the eyes of the scouts from all over the world. His immense ball control, assisting prowess made him a fan favourite in Germany.
In the 2017-2018 Season, he scored 12 goals in 39 games.
He was named in the Germany FIFA World Cup 2018 23-man squad ahead of Leroy Sane (PFA Young Player of the year 2018) which was much speculated in the media.
