Controversies | Speeding & driving without licence In March 2013, Benzema was banned for 8 months from driving and fined 18 thousand euros for exceeding the speed limit. He was caught driving at 194 kph on Madrid’s M40 ring road with speed limit of 100 kph. In May 2015, he was caught driving his Rolls Royce car without a valid driving licence. Benzema was caught again in 2017 for driving without a licence after he was given a ticket for breaking road safety laws, and his vehicle was impounded. Involvement in Prostitution Ring In April 2010, a French TV channel M6 reported that four of French national players which included Franck Ribéry, Sidney Govou, Hatem Ben Arfa, and Benzema were clients of a prostitution ring outside a nightclub in Paris which also had a few underage girls. On 18 July 2010, Benzema was questioned and charged under 'solicitation of a minor prostitute.' Prosecutors alleged that Benzema had intercourse with a 16 year old girl named Zahia Dehar but he rejected the claims. In November 2011, prosecutors requested the court to drop the charges against him and Ribery. The court initially did not drop the charges but in January 2014, the case was dropped due to insufficient evidence. Blackmailing charges The French Police arrested Benzema on 4 November 2015 on the charges of blackmailing fellow French player Mathieu Valbuena. It was alleged that Benzema told Valbuena to transfer money to his childhood friend Karim Zenati or he would leak a sex tape of Valbuena and his girlfriend on the internet. Franck Ribery and Djibril Cisse were also questioned regarding the case but later released. French manager Didier Deschamps removed Benzema and Valbuena from the national team after which Benzema criticised his removal as a racist action. On 24 November 2021, Benzema was found guilty and gave him a one-year suspended sentence and fined him €75,000. In June 2022, his fine was lowered to €63,000. Benzema's lawyers stated after the judgement that they would appeal the conviction. Comments against Oliver Giroud Benzema was doing an Instagram livestream with the YouTuber and internet personality Mohamed Henni in March 2020 when he talked about French striker Oliver Giroud and said that he was F1 while Giroud was Karting. This angered many football fans who criticised Benzema after which he came up with a clarification and said that he meant those words in a positive sense, and he was karting in comparison to Cristiano Ronaldo who was F1. Giroud replied back by saying that he was hurt by Benzema's comments but those comments gave him the motivation to perform well so that he could prove that his place in the French national team was well-deserved. Calling Deschamps a liar After French Manager Didier Deschamps gave a statement to the press that it was Benzema's decision to not play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He claimed that Benzema decided to return to Spain after he got injured; however, Benzema took to Instagram and wrote that Deschamps was a liar, and he would provide answers to the public. Defamation suit against minister In October 2023, the French Interior Minister, Gérald Darmanin, alleged Karim Benzema of having links with the political and religious group Muslim Brotherhood, a group declared a terrorist organisation by France. Benzema denied those claims and filed a defamation suit against Darmanin for trying to use his name to get political advantage without any evidence. |
