- Mohaddesa Jafri is an Indian pilot who is known for being the first Shia woman from Maharashtra to achieve a business pilot license.
- In an interview, she said that in 2003, when Kalpana Chawla died, she was only seven years old. One day she was going to the market with her father when she saw posters of Kalpana Chawla on the streets, she asked her father who she was, to which he told her about the achievements of Kalpana Chawla. She further added that she became a fan of Kalpana Chawla that day. She further said,
I silently became Kalpana Chawla’s fan and as I grew up, I read several biographies and hundreds of articles and watched many videos on her. I told my parents I wanted to join the aviation industry.”
- After she took admission to the flying school in South Africa, her parents had to hear remarks like ‘How could a maulana and alema (female religious scholar) put their only daughter into a pilot’s course?’ from their relatives. In an interview, her mother talked about this and said,
We kept quiet as we knew we were not doing anything wrong. If our daughter had a dream and there was nothing irreligious or immoral in it, we had to support her.”
