ControversyRemarks on The Kashmir Files: Nadav Lapid attracted controversy after he gave a negative remark on the Bollywood film The Kashmir Files on 28 November 2022. Nadav was invited to the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where he, as a Chief Juror, during a press conference, said that he was deeply disturbed by the film and called it "disturbing and vulgar." While calling the film Schindler's List of India, he said that the film was propaganda, and he was unhappy with the film's inclusion in IFFI. While talking about it at the press conference, Nadav said,
"The jury was disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files, that felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel comfortable to openly share this feeling with you since the spirit of the festival can truly accept critical discussion which is essential for art and life."
After his remark, Naor Gilon, Israel's Ambassador to India, apologized to the Indians and tweeted that Nadav should be ashamed of his statement. He also said that Nadav should have conducted research on the Kashmiri Pandit's exodus from the Kashmir valley before giving the statement. [4]WION [5]The Times of Israel In his tweet, Naor Gilon said,
"In Indian culture, they say that a guest is like God. You have abused in the worst way the Indian invitation to chair the panel of judges at IFFI Goa as well as the trust, respect and warm hospitality they have bestowed on you. I’m no film expert but I do know that it is very insensitive and presumptuous to speak about historic events before deeply studying them and which are an open wound in India because many of the involved are still around and still paying a price. My suggestion. As you vocally did in the past, feel free to use the liberty to sound your criticism of what you dislike in Israel but no need to reflect your frustration on other countries. I’m not sure that you have enough factual basis to make such comparisons. I know I don’t."
Vivek Agnihotri, the producer and director of The Kashmir Files, challenged anyone, including Nadav, to prove anything shown in the film as false and baseless. [6]The Indian Express During an interview, Vivek said,
"They keep calling The Kashmir Files a propaganda film. Are they saying that the genocide of Hindus did not happen? Today, I challenge all intellectuals of the world, all the Urban Naxals of the world — and even this great filmmaker from Israel — if they can prove even one scene, one dialogue in The Kashmir Files is fictional, I will stop making films."
Nadav later apologized for his remarks on the film and said that his remarks were not intended to hurt the sentiments of the Indians and the relatives of the people who died during their exodus from Kashmir. [7]Hindustan Times Talking about it, during an interview, he said,
"I did not want to insult anyone in any way, and my aim was never to insult the people of India or their relatives, who have suffered so much. I totally totally totally apologize for it, if that is the way they have interpreted my statement as."
