• Raj Kumar grew up in a large joint family of 22 members.

• He completed his school education in his village.

• After completing his schooling, he was enrolled in Mechanical Engineering at the IIT (BHU), Varanasi.

• After completing his formal education, Raj Kumar Beniwal worked with Tata and later with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

• He then joined Indian Railways as a first-class engineer and worked there for about one year.

• His father played an important role in his decision to change his career. His father told him either to prepare for the civil services or return home and help with farming. Raj Kumar then chose to prepare for the civil services.

• Raj Kumar Beniwal then cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination and joined the Indian Administrative Service in 2004. He was allotted the Gujarat cadre.

• After that, he completed a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Duke University in the United States.

• He started his career as an Assistant Collector (Junior Scale) in Mehsana, Gujarat, where he served from 3 August 2006 to 24 March 2008.

• On 24 March 2008, he was appointed as the District Development Officer and Under Secretary in Kutch. He served in the position till 3 July 2011.

• From 3 July 2011 to 2 July 2014, he served as the District Collector and Under Secretary in Mehsana.

• Raj Kumar Beniwal was then posted as the District Collector and Under Secretary in Ahmedabad, where he worked from 2 July 2014 to 5 May 2016.

• From 29 April 2013 to 21 June 2013, he pursued a mid career program training for IAS Officers – Phase III.

• On 6 May 2016, he was appointed as the Managing Director and Under Secretary of the Industrial Extension Bureau (INDEXTb) in Gandhinagar. He served in the position till 14 July 2020.

• On 15 July 2020, Raj Kumar Beniwal became the Commissioner and Joint Secretary in the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration, Gandhinagar, under the Municipal Administration Department.

• On 22 June 2023, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman and CEO of the Gujarat Maritime Board in Gandhinagar. He served in the position till September 2026.

• During this period, he focused on the ports, logistics, and maritime development.

• Raj Kumar Beniwal also represented the Gujarat Maritime Board on the board of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited.

• After that, he served as a Senior Government Officer for the Economic Master Plan of Kutch, which deals with the long-term economic development of the district.

• In December 2025, Raj Kumar Beniwal was appointed as the Managing Director of the Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited in Bharuch.

• From 15 June 2026 to 10 July 2026, he attended 21st round of PHase IV MCTP training.

• In September 2026, he was appointed as the Municipal Commissioner of Surat, Gujarat.
