He has been a member of Janata Dal (United) for more than 10 years. He has been an MLA in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, a Minister in several Bihar governments, and a Rajya Sabha MP.
  • During his teenage years, he started participating in non-violent movement in the 1970s. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, Jai Prakash Narayan (popularly called Lok Nayak), and his father, Karpoori Thakur (popularly called Jan Nayak) have a major influence on his political vision.
