• On 16 December 2016, Sanjay Phogat’s dead body was discovered at his farmhouse by the family that lived there and farmed on the land. The farmhouse is located ten kilometres from his family’s residence in Hisar.   He had talked to us, before going to bed. Then he was perfectly fine. We received a call in the morning from the family, farming on our land, asking us to reach the spot immediately as something bad has happened. By the time we reached our farmhouse, Sanjay was lying dead with police on the spot. We do not think anything mallicious happened. Rest let us wait for the post-mortem report to come.”

• During an interview, while talking about her husband, Sonali Phogat said that Sanjay always stood in support of her, and he always wanted her to pursue her dreams. She said,
  

  My husband has always been by my side.. My biggest motivator. I would not have been what I am had he not been there. After his death I wanted to leave everything and just go. But it was my mother in law who motivated me and reminded me of his dreams, how he wanted me to succeed.”

• According to Sonali Phogat, all the rumours regarding her husband’s death were all manufactured stories. She rejected the notion of her husband committing suicide or being murdered and claimed that he died a natural death. While talking about the incident, Sonali, in an interview, said,
  

  I do not know from where people cook up such stories. He died a natural death, and had something been off, the police would have revealed it to us then. There is nothing more to it than that.”
