Some Lesser Known Facts About Sethuraman Panchanathan

• His father was a scientist and professor who studied upper-atmospheric physics.

• His father’s work and his own interest in science strongly influenced his career.

• In 1969, when Sethuraman Panchanathan was eight years old, the United States of America sent Apollo 11 astronauts to the Moon. After the mission, pieces of Moon rock were taken to different countries so that people could see them.

• His father took him to the American Center in Chennai. There was a huge line of people waiting to see the Moon rocks.

• When Panchanathan saw them, he realised that they were simply rocks. However, he began thinking about the much bigger question,
  

  How had human beings managed to travel to the Moon, collect those rocks and bring them back to Earth?”

• That thought stayed with him.

• In his later interviews he described that experience as a “STEM spark moment” as it made him curious about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

• After completing his Ph.D. in 1989, Sethuraman Panchanathan joined the University of Ottawa as an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

• He then co-founded MotionEase Inc.

• In 1997, Sethuraman Panchanathan started working at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering as an associate professor at the Arizona State University.

• In July 2003, he was appointed as the Director of Institute for Computing and Information Science and Engineering (InCISE). He served in the position till December 2008.

• He then served as the Director of School of Computing and Informatics at the Arizona State University from January 2006 to December 2008.

• From January 2009 to November 2011, he served as the University Chief Research Officer at Arizona State University.

• He then served as the Director of the Center for Cognitive Ubiquitous Computing (CUbiC) from January 2001 to July 2020.

• He founded CUbiC, which developed devices, technologies, and environments to help people with disabilities.

• One of CUbiC’s major projects was iCARE, which focused on developing technology for blind and visually impaired people.

• iCARE received the Governor’s Innovator of the Year in Academia Award in 2004.

• In January 2009, he was appointed as the Foundation Chairman of Computing and Informatics. He served in the position till July 2020.

• He served as Executive Vice President for Knowledge Enterprise Development and Chief Research and Innovation Officer from November 2011 to July 2020.

• During this period, he developed the research and innovation activities of the university.

• He worked as a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering from August 1997 to October 2025.

• In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama appointed Panchanathan to the National Science Board.

• Panchanathan then served as a chairman of the board’s Committee on Strategy and Budget.

• He also served as chair of the Council on Research of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and co-chaired the Extreme Innovation Taskforce of the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils.

• In 2018, the governor of Arizona appointed Panchanathan as a Senior Advisor for Science and Technology.

• In 2019, Panchanathan was nominated to become Director of the U.S. National Science Foundation. The U.S. Senate then appointed him to the position on 18 June 2020.

• He then became the 15th Director of NSF in June 2020.

• During his time as NSF director, Panchanathan worked on research, technology development, innovation, STEM education, and partnerships between government, universities, and industry.

• During his leadership at NSF, the creation of the Directorate for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships, known as TIP, was the biggest change.

• Another major programme developed under his leadership was the NSF Regional Innovation Engines programme.

• In 2020, IISc presented him its Distinguished Alumnus Award for his contributions to human-centred computing and technologies, which benefits people with disabilities.

• In 2024, under his leadership, NSF joined other U.S. government agencies and announced that they would invest more than $5 billion in research and development under the CHIPS and Science Act.

• On 24 April 2025, Panchanathan resigned as NSF Director.

• In May 2025, he started working at Arizona State University as University Professor of Technology and Innovation.

• He is serves as the Foundation Chairman in Computing and Augmented Intelligence.

• In 2025, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri for his contributions to Science. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on 27 May 2025.

• In 2026, the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) selected him for the Arthur M. Bueche Award, which recognises contributions to engineering through leadership, innovation, and influence.

• According to ASU, he became the first Indian American and first Arizonan to receive the award.

• His major research interests includes, Artificial intelligence, Machine learning, Human-centred computing, Multimedia computing, Image and video processing, Haptic user interfaces, Medical image processing, Face and gait analysis, Ubiquitous computing, Assistive technologies, Rehabilitation technologies, and Media processor design.

• His work has particularly focused on using technology to solve problems faced by people.

• During his academic career, he has published more than 500 research papers in journals and conference proceedings.
