  • Shubham Kumaris the All India Rank 1 holder in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination held in 2020.
  • After completing his schooling, he got 219th rank in the engineering entrance exam and got admission to IIT Bombay. While he was in IIT Bombay, he became the General Secretary Social and Cultural, and, in his tenure, Hostel 6 in IIT Bombay won its first Cultural Cup.

  • In May 2017, he joined Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, as a summer research intern.
  • In 2018, he made his first attempt in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination, but he could not clear the exam.
  • In 2019, he again appeared for the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination and got 290th rank. He was then selected in the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) and was training at the National Academy of Defence Financial Management Institute (NADFM), Pune, when he appeared for the third time for the UPSC CSE in 2020.
  • He became the topper in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services Examination in his third attempt in 2020. His total scores were 1054 (878 in the written test and 176 in the personality test). He opted for Anthropology as his optional subject for the examination. The Indian additional chief secretary of the Bihar government, Amir Subhani, from Bihar had topped the UPSC CSE exam in 1987, and after 33 years, Shubham became the UPSC topper from Bihar.
  • He did not attend any coaching classes for his preparation for the exam. He used to study 7 to 8 hours daily for his pre exams, and after clearing his pre, he started studying 8 to 10 hours daily for his mains.
  • In an interview, Shubham said that the development of villages, employment generation, and poverty alleviation in rural areas of the country would be his primary focus. He further added,

    My dream was to get into the IAS as it gives a wider platform to work for the betterment of the people. It has been realised and I would like to work for the underprivileged people, especially in rural areas. My father used to motivate me a lot and helped me in maintaining a positive attitude that helped me in clearing the exam. I have been preparing since 2018. I could not believe the results today. I will perform with my fullest capacity in whichever position I’m assigned to.”

    He continued,

    I used to have a fear of disqualification before the prelims and mains. I was fortunate to have the constant support of my friends and family. I had a good plan for study, used to self analyse so my preparation was on track. I was not expecting this rank. Neither I nor my family could believe it when we first saw the rank list. It took us some time to realise that this had actually happened. My parents are thrilled with my success… As an IAS officer, I will work with a focus on rural development. I will be really happy if I get Bihar cadre.”

  • While talking to the reporter, his mother said,

    His grandmother and grandfather always wanted Shubham to become an officer and keep asking. Shubham has been a meritorious and topper in studies since childhood. He always wanted to become an IAS. Since childhood, he was calm and meritorious and after class 6, he studied in Patna and then did 10th education from Bihar. I did not tie him Potli but a thread of protection.”
