- Steph McGovern’s childhood was in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England.
- In 1997, at age 15, she won the Irish World Dancing Championships (Oireachtas Rince na Cruinne) at Galway, Ireland.
- In 1998, at the start of her sixth form (the final two years of secondary education in some Commonwealth countries), she won the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship from The Smallpiece Trust for potential leadership qualities in the engineering field.
- After her sixth form, she took a gap year (a sabbatical year taken by students). She worked as a junior member of the Six Sigma team specialising in lean production with Black+Decker, a power tool manufacturer in Durham.
- While working at Black+Decker, she won two major awards – Young Engineer for Britain and the Year in Industry (YinI) for outstanding contribution to the industry business. She was instrumental in saving the company approximately £150,000 by contributing to an innovative production technique in the manufacturing process of Leaf Hog.
