Some Lesser Known Facts About Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi
- Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was a notable Hindu leader in Rajasthan, who served as the President of the right-wing organization Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena (SRRKS). He gained widespread recognition during the 2017 case involving Indian gangster Anand Pal Singh’s encounter and for leading protests against the production and release of the Indian historical film Padmaavat (2018). On 5 December 2023, he was fatally shot dead by unidentified attackers in Jaipur.
- By 2018, there were three primary factions within the Karni Sena: the Shri Rajput Karni Sena led by Lokendra Singh Kalvi, the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena Samiti led by Ajeet Singh Mamdoli, and the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena led by Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi. The original organization, Karni Sena (or Shri Rajput Karni Sena), was established in 2006, with Ajeet Singh Mamdoli serving as its first President. The organization’s primary goal was to advocate for reservation rights for Rajputs, and it also aimed to address the promotion of Rajput figures in educational materials while encouraging Rajput legislators in the government. During the 2008 Rajasthan Assembly elections, Karni Sena allied with the Congress on the condition that a specific number of tickets would be allocated to Rajputs. However, internal disagreements during negotiations led to Lokendra Singh Kalvi’s departure from the organization. In 2010, Kalvi joined the Congress and formed his own faction, the Shri Rajput Karni Sena (SRKS). Ajeet Singh Mamdoli filed a legal case against Kalvi’s SRKS for using the name of his already registered organization. After that, Kalvi appointed Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi as the state president of his faction.
- In 2015, Gogamedi was expelled from the Karni Sena led by Kalvi due to criminal charges. Subsequently, he formed his own faction known as Shree Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena.
- Gogamedi made headlines after Indian gangster Anand Pal Singh’s encounter on 24 June 2017. Anand Pal Singh had attained a cult-like status among many Rajput and Ravana Rajput youths, who saw him as a defender of Rajputs against the rival Jat community. His death led to violent protests, involving the uprooting of railway tracks, damage to public property, and a person being allegedly killed in police firing.
- In 2017, Karni Sena gained national attention by leading protests against Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s film Padmaavat (2018), starring Deepika Padukone in the main role. The organizations claimed that the film showed romantic scenes between Chittor queen Padmini and Alauddin Khilji in a dream sequence, offending Rajput sentiments. Both the Karni Sena led by Kalvi and the Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena led by Gogamedi staged violent protests across several Indian districts before the film’s release in January 2018, including the vandalism of theatres screening the film. Previously, these organizations had also protested against Bollywood films Jodha Akbar (2013) and Veer (2010).
- In April 2023, Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena organized the Kesariya Mahapanchayat in Jaipur. The gathering aimed to advocate for an increase in Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation from 10 percent to 14 percent and urged the state government to establish a Kshatriya Rajput Kalyan Board. Additionally, they called on the central government to relax the conditions of EWS reservation in central government recruitment.
- On 5 December 2023, Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was fatally shot by unidentified assailants in Jaipur in the Shyam Nagar area. The attackers entered his residence, shot him, and quickly fled the scene. The entire incident was captured on CCTV. Four individuals entered Gogamedi’s house and opened gunfire. One of the assailants, identified as Naveen Singh Shekhawat, was killed in retaliatory firing. The CCTV footage shows Gogamedi collapsing from the gunshot wounds. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Ajit Singh, who was with Gogamedi during the incident, sustained severe injuries.
- In the aftermath of the murder, supporters of Gogamedi staged a protest in Jaipur. In a media conversation, a relative mentioned that Gogamedi had been receiving threats for a long period of time and had feared an attack. The relative claimed that the police had been informed about these threats. Additionally, Rajput groups announced a shutdown (bandh) in several districts, including Bundi and Baran. In Jodhpur and Barmer, they also called for a protest in front of the divisional headquarters.
- After the assault, gangster Rohit Godara Kapurisar took responsibility for Gogamedi’s murder through a Facebook post.
Godara had previously claimed accountability for the killing of another gangster, Raju Thehat, in Sikar, Rajasthan. Rohit Godara is affiliated with the Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar gang. Bishnoi is infamous for his involvement in the murder of the popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala and for issuing threats to Salman Khan in 2018 regarding the blackbuck hunting incident. Godara’s Facebook post stated that Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was targeted because he allegedly supported their enemies.
- On 6 December, the police found two suspects named Rohit Rathore Makrana and Nitin Fauji in Gogamedi’s murder case. The police announced a reward of Rs 5 Lakhs for information leading to their arrest. Nitin Fauji, who comes from Mahendragarh, was identified as one of the people who shot at Gogamedi. Reports suggest that Nitin Fauji was in contact with the gang led by Lawrence Bishnoi.
