Controversies | • Mohammed Ali Jinnah's portrait in university In 2018, he was involved in a controversy after students at the university sat on protests for Mohammed Ali Jinnah's portrait on the university campus. He met Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in reference to the issue and said that it was a non-issue. He further said that the portrait of the Pakistan founder was hanging in the AMU students' union office since 1938 and it was a non-issue. After the issue was raised, the university formed a 16-member coordination committee of senior faculty members to talk with the protesting students. The students were demanding action against right-wing protesters who had entered the campus and were shouting slogans. The students also asked for a judicial probe into the "police inaction." The national spokesperson of Hindu Mahasabha, Ashok Pandey accused him of not taking any action against the people who illegally occupied the land on which AMU was built. He said that the land was taken because the university did not take any action. He also claimed that Tariq had later taken the land from the people in his nephew's name. - Tariq Mansoor is an Indian professor who is known for being the Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in India since 17 May 2017.
- From 1980 to 1983, he taught MBBS students as Clinical Registrar at JN Medical College. After this, he was the CMO of the Medical College from 1983 to 1985. He worked as a surgical specialist at King Fahr Teaching Hospital in Saudi Arabia from 1985 to 1986. After this, from 1986 to 1993, he was Assistant Professor at JN Medical College. He was the Associate Professor from 1993 to 2001. From 1997 to 1999, he was the Honorary Secretary of the AMU Teaching Staff Association. He was a professor for 11 consecutive years from 2002 to 2013 at the Department of Surgery, JN Medical College. From 2006 to 2009, he was the chairman of the Department of Surgery at JN Medical College. He became the secretary of the University Games Committee in 2007 and worked till 2014. Later, he became the Principal of Medical and CMS from 2013 to 2017. In 2013, he became the Chief Medical Superintendent at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital. Since 2013, he works at AMU Court. From the year 2017 till now he is the Vice Chancellor of AMU.

- In 2018, when he was serving as the vice chancellor of AMU, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind were Chief Guests at University Convocation. Tariq represented India in India-Indonesia Inter-Faith Dialogue in Yogyakarta. He was a part of the delegation of the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India in 2018 in Indonesia, the R20 International Religion Forum Summit (part of G-20 events in conjunction with the Indonesian Presidency of G-20) in Bali in 2022, a symposium on Higher Education in South Asia held in Istanbul which was organised by Hollings Center for International Dialogue, Washington, USA in 2019.
- In 2018, the governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satya Pal Malik contacted Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar and asked for his intervention to make sure that the Kashmiri students at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) study smoothly. Later, Malik talked to Tariq in this regard and asked him to ensure a safe, secure and well-disposed academic environment for Kashmiri students.
- In 2019, Tariq released a statement saying that the university had to call the police because of the anti-social elements (including expelled ex-students) who forcibly entered the university by breaking the Bab-e-Syed gate. In the statement, he said that the students came in when a piece of fake news regarding the death of two students of Jamia Millia Islamia in police firing was spread. After entering, the students started stone-pelting the police.
- In 2019, Tariq accepted the offer by the Central government that asked him to sanction a grant of over Rs. 100 crore for the construction of hostels at the university’s off-campus centres in Kerala and West Bengal. This offer was made by the Ministry of Minority Affairs because the AMU off-campus centres in Malappuram (Kerala), Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Kishanganj (Bihar) did not have enough funds for many years for basic facilities.
- During the Covid-19 pandemic, smart classes for online teaching were started by him. The JNMC Hospital with the help of Tariq did testing, treatment and vaccine trials for Covid-19.
- When Tariq was the vice-chancellor of AMU, many students protested against the CAA-NRC movement in the university but Tariq helped in removing the dharna from the campus. Amid the protests, in 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the campus online. Also, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the campus. According to various media reports, no other BJP CM except for Narayan Dutt Tiwari had visited AMU.
- In 2020, while he was addressing the Republic Day function at the university, in the speech, he said that the CAA-NRC protests taken out in the university were not good and that in the university, only peaceful protests would be allowed. After the speech, there was a group of students who started raising slogans for Tariq’s removal. The students were taken to the proctor’s office because of their behaviour.
- During the CAA protests, he wrote a letter to the UP chief secretary and police chief saying that he and his family were being threatened by the students who were protesting. In the letter, he mentioned that he was labelled as an ”RSS/BJP member” and CAA ”supporter.”
- In 2020, he became the first volunteer for the third phase of clinical trials for Covaxin by pharmaceutical firm Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
- In 2021, there were posters put in the AMU against Tariq because he expressed his condolences on the death of former UP chief minister Kalyan Singh. According to students, Kalyan Singh was the CM when the Babri masjid was demolished in 1992. In the posters, it was written that it was an ‘unforgiving crime’ done by Tariq.
- In 2022, he came in support of the Agneepath Yojana brought for army recruitment. He told the youngsters not to protest against the scheme and participate in it.
- In 2023, he was chosen as the Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) from the BJP by UP governor Anandibai Patel. After his election, he resigned from the post of vice-chancellor. In an open letter to university students and staff, Tariq said,
As I demit office, this is the last time I address you as the Vice-Chancellor. I had the opportunity of serving the institution for six years during good and challenging times.”
- According to the students at AMU, Tariq never supported the students of his college and was always against them. Citing examples of this, they said that during the CAA-NRC protests, he did not stop the police that attacked the students. The students also said that he gave permission to the police and paramilitary to enter the university campus. Another incident of this was when the Aligarh Muslim University did not include books by two Islamic scholars in its syllabus of the Department of Islamic Studies. The two books were by Abul A’la al-Maududi of Pakistan and Sayyid Qutb of Egypt. The Right-wing ideologues had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop using the book in college. In 2023, Tariq gave his opinion on the BBC series — The Modi Question and face a lot of criticism not just from the student but secular groups for saying that the Muslim minority community in India under the Right-Wing rule was not facing any problems.
