- Before joining main stream politics, V. S. Babu build his political career by doing local level political work.
- His major political breakthrough cam in 2006, when he won the Tamil Nadu Assembly election from Purasawalkam as a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)’s candidate. In the election he defeated his opponent by a margin of 90,000 votes.
- From 2006 to 2011, during his tenure, he worked mainly at grassroots level like resolving urban civic issues including drainage, road construction and repair, water supply and housing in his constituency.
- After that, he stayed politically active and continued doing organisational work but remained out of mainstream media attentions.

In the election Babu received more than 82,000 votes, Stalin, who held the seat since 2011, got around 73,000. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)’s R Santhanakrishnan stood in the third position with 14,000 votes.
