Controversies | • In 2010, a car belonging to Gopal Kanda was seized; as it was used in committing gang-rape in New Delhi. The victim was a cook in the home of Kanda's relative, and she alleged that Kanda's driver and his friends had picked her up and then they raped her. Some Lesser Known Facts About Gopal Kanda
- Gopal Kanda is an Indian politician and a businessman. He is an independent elected MLA from the Sirsa Assembly seat of Haryana.
- His ancestors were traders who used to weigh vegetables at a wholesale market in Sirsa, Haryana. This is the reason why he uses the surname “Kanda.” Kanda means the iron weights which are used by the traders. [11]India Today
- He used to live with his family in a two-room apartment above a shop.
- He started working as an electrician in a repair shop.
- He started doing business by starting a shoe repair shop. However, it did not run so well, and he suffered a huge loss.
- He got involved in many other businesses, but he faced back-to-back failures.
- In 1997, he moved to Gurgaon to try his luck in the real estate business. He was successful this time and with the help of an IAS officer, he managed to exploit and take advantage of legal reforms. Eventually, he became a developer.
- By the end of 2005, Kanda owned many businesses, and he also had stakes in a hotel, casino, clothing lines, export businesses, and car dealerships.
- On 14 March 2007, his company, Murli Dhar Lakh Ram (MDLR) Group, launched the “MDLR Airlines.” However, the airlines were shut down in 2009; as there was a tax raid on the company and it also suffered huge losses. Several employees were also convicted after the tax raid and MDLR Airlines became a part of “Emirates Airlines” in 2010.
- In 2006, he entered politics. He used his connections with Om Prakash Chautala of the INLD and a religious leader, Tara Baba, to leverage them and provide him with an easy entry into politics.
- Even though he became popular in Haryana as a leader, the INLD refused to accept him as a member of their party; as they thought that Kanda was incapable of winning. He approached the Congress, but they refused to give him a ticket too.
- Kanda contested the 2009 Haryana Assembly Elections from the Sirsa Assembly seat as an independent candidate and won. He defeated INLD’s Padam Jain by 6521 votes.
- The Congress had won 40 seats in the 2009 Haryana Assembly Elections, and it was 6 seats short of reaching the halfway mark to form the government in Haryana. Kanda supported the Congress and helped Congress get the support of 6 independent candidates to form the Government.
