  • Vikram Bhatt is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, and actor who is best known for directing the Indian horror film series ‘Raaz’ and film ‘Ghulam’ (1999).
  • Born into a family of pioneers of the Indian film industry, Bhatt was inclined towards pursuing a career in filmmaking since childhood.

  • He began his career at the age of fourteen as an assistant director. In 1990, he worked as the chief assistant director for the film ‘Agneepath.’
  • After his directional debut with the musical romance film ‘Jaanam’ (1992), his following four films did not fare well at the box office. In 1996, he came into the limelight when he directed the psychological thriller film ‘Fareb.’

  • Thereafter, he directed the successful films Ghulam (1998), Kasoor (2001), and Awara Paagal Deewana (2002).
  • On the sets of the psychological thriller film Dastak (1996), Bhatt’s debut film as a writer, he made acquaintance with Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen, who was the lead actress of the film. Soon after, Bhatt began his extra-marital affair with Sen, which led to Bhatt’s divorce from Aditi Bhatt in 1988. Bhatt and Sen’s relationship was short-lived.
  • In 1997, Bhatt and Sen made an appearance in the interview-style talk show ‘Simi Garewal’s show.’ When Simi asked about being in a relationship with Bhatt while he was still married, Sen replied,

    The wife and him were not living together, and I cannot go around feeling guilty or make a person feel guilty if he had a bad marriage. I don’t fell guilty because I have done something very openly with a very open conscience. I know that the man was in a divorce when I met him, and I wasn’t going to wait to tell the world that I loved him just because he hadn’t gone through with his divorce yet.”

  • In a tell-all interview in 2021, Bhatt revealed that he contemplated suicide after the break-up of his marriage with childhood sweetheart Aditi. In the heartfelt interview, he said,

    That was not because of Sushmita. That was because of what I’d done to my life. I had gotten divorced, my film Ghulam was yet to be released, I was only Sushmita Sen’s boyfriend, I was depressed, I missed my daughter like crazy…I had just made a mess of my life.”

  • In 2002, he gained popularity for directing the supernatural horror film ‘Raaz’, starring Bipasha Basu, Dino Morea and Malini Sharma.
