  • Malini Awasthi is an Indian folk singer. Her genre of singing is Hindi and Awadhi languages. She also sings in semi-classical forms of songs such as Kajri and Thumri. In 2006, she was conferred with the Yash Bharti award by the Uttar Pradesh Government. In 2016, she was honoured with the fourth-highest civilian award ‘Padma Shri’ by the government of India.
  • In her childhood, Malini Awasthi often visited musical concerts with her father that grew her interest in music. Her mother also inspired Malini a lot in developing a taste in music. In a conversation with a media house, she talked about her family atmosphere, in her childhood, towards learning music. She said,

    My parents were not singers but had a taste for music. We (elder brother, sister and I) grew up listening to LP records at home, mostly classical renditions of musical stalwarts, thanks to our father. My sister used to take lessons from a guru who used to come over at 5.30 am. I joined his early morning class when I was barely five.”

  • At the age of fourteen, Malini Awasthi learnt to sing ghazals and Sufi songs from legendary teachers named Shujaat Husain Khan and Rahat Ali Khan of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. She narrated her childhood opportunities in a conversation with a media person. Malini Awasthi said,

    Shujaat Husain Khan and Rahat Ali Khan. I received lessons in folk, classical, Sufiyana and ghazals from Rahat Ali. I was barely 14 then and to get an opportunity like this only helped me hone my voice and perfect the nuances.”

  • Malini Awasthi regularly performs at the annual three-day Sufi music festival named Jahan-e-Khusrau held in New Delhi, India. During her stage performances, Malini Awasthi often sings the song Thaare Raho Baanke Shyam in the Thumari genre.
  • The Legendary Hindustani Classical Singer, Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi of Banaras Gharana is Malini Awasthi’s music master.
  • When Malini Awasthi was studying at Bhatkhande Music Institute in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, she gave a stage performance that was noticed by legendary Hindustani classical singer Vidhushi Girija Devi, and after the show, Vidhushi Devi offered Malini to accompany her to Kolkata to learn music. Malini Awasthi fondly calls Vidhushi Devi Appajee. Malini, after receiving the offer from a great Indian folk singer, jumped with happiness. However, at that time Malini’s wedding date was fixed. So, she did not accompany Vidhushi Devi to Kolkata. Later, after marrying Uttar Pradesh cadre IAS officer Awanish Kumar Awasthi, Malini Awasthi pursued her passion for music with the support of her husband. Later, when her husband was posted in Varanasi, Malini Awasthi got the chance to learn music from Vidhushi Girija Devi. In an interview with a media house, Malini narrated about her supportive husband. She described,

    I am blessed to have him as my life partner who has supported and encouraged me all through.”

  • In 2008, Malini Awasthi was part of NDTV Imagine’s Junoon, a television singing reality show.

  • The government and election commission of Uttar Pradesh appointed Malini Awasthi as its brand ambassador of the Uttar Pradesh Elections in 2012 and 2014.
  • In 2015, Malini Awasthi sang the song ‘Sundar Shusheel’ for the Bollywood movie Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The music composer of the song was Anu Malik. She has sung various other songs as a playback singer for the Bollywood movies like Bumm Bumm Bole (2010), Agent Vinod (2012), Chaarfutiya Chhokare (2014), and Bhagan Ke Rekhan ki – Issaq (2013).
  • Banaras Hindu University has honoured Malini Awasthi with ‘Centenary Chair Professor’ in the Bharat Adhyan Kendra for her contribution to Indian classical music.

    There used to be chain bookings in those days. I had performances at three places – Raipur, Raigarh, and Ambikapur – and I carried my daughter who was four and son who was one and a half to all these places, with my mother and mother-in-law in tow because I didn’t want to miss it. Such was my level of attachment to music.”

  • Malini Awasthi often represents Indian folk singing and culture at national and international cultural events. Nationally, she regularly performs at Thumri-Festival and Rag-rang-Festival, Taj-Mahotsav, Shruti-Mandal-Samaroh, Kumbhal-Gardh-Festival, Heritage-Festival-Pinjore in Punjab and Haryana. Internationally, Malini Awasthi is a regular performer at Indian festival celebrations in the Netherlands and Vishwa Bhojpuri Sammelan at Mauritius. In 2004, she performed at the Independence Day celebration in Houston in the USA, and in 2015, she presented at the Festival of India in Mauritius.
  • Malini Awasthi is an ardent environmentalist. In 2019, she was invited by the Indian minister Prakash Keshav Javadekar, who was the then Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, for planting a sapling on World Environment Day.

He was the grandson of Ustaad Mushtaq Hussain Khan saab.  I was around 10 when he taught me the first lessons of classical music. Lata ji and Asha ji were the benchmarks and in non-filmy, Begum Akhtar was considered the supremo.”

  • On 11 September 2021, Malini Awasthi stated on a news channel that in 2005, during the Congress government in India, she was stopped from singing a song on Doordarshan as it had the lyrics that Lord Rama was born in Ayodhaya. She said,

    Since I am inquisitive by nature, I asked them what’s the problem with this composition. They said it refers to Lord Rama’s birth in Ayodhya. Being a follower of Sanathan Dharma, this was unacceptable to me. We have celebrated Lord Rama’s birth in Ayodhya for years. I told them I cannot record any other hymn if you are seeking to deny the truth.”
