  • Manjula Subramaniam was an Indian Administrative Service Officer of the 1972 batch of the Gujarat cadre. On 31 August 2007, she became the first woman Chief Secretary of Gujarat.
  • Manjula grew up in a middle-class family in Gujarat.
  • After passing the civil service examinations, Manjula received IAS training at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA).
  • Post her training, she was posted as Assistant Collector (Junior Scale) in Surat on 1 August 1974.
  • As an IAS officer, she served Gujarat and the centre at various positions including District Collector of Junagadh, District Collector of Amreli, Deputy Secretary of the Personnel & Administrative Reforms, Deputy Secretary of the Industries & Mines Department, Joint Chief Controller (Import & Export) of the Commerce Industry, Joint Secretary to the Government of India, and Additional Chief Secretary of the Finance Department.
  • While serving as the Principal Secretary of the Energy & Petrochemicals Department, she was actively involved in the ‘Jyoti Gram Yojana,’ a Gujarat Government initiative to ensure 24-hour, three-phase quality power supply in rural areas of Gujarat.

    Anguished by the demise of veteran bureaucrat Dr Manjula Subramaniam Ji. She was widely respected for her understanding of policy-related issues and action-oriented approach. I recall my interactions with her when I was CM. Condolences to her family and friends. Om Shanti.”
