Some Lesser Known Facts About Vijay Anand
The great filmmaker, if ever there is one…will not know why he is making a film. Only after being prodded by limiting questions by enthusiasts wanting to slot the soul, shall he answer. Very rarely would you find an artist who can create, express, evaluate, judge, formulate rules and teach. I am a student, I am not a teacher yet. But I know I have the makings of a teacher.” – Vijay Anand
- Vijay Anand was an Indian filmmaker, producer, actor, editor, and screenwriter who worked in Hindi Cinema. He is known for directing films of almost every genre including thrillers, romantic comedies, and family dramas. Vijay Anand is popularly known as the younger brother of the Hindi film producer and director Chetan Anand and matinée idol Dev Anand.
- In addition to his original screenplays, Vijay Anand is renowned for his innovative picturization of songs like ‘Tere Mere Sapne Ab Ek Rang Hain’ from Guide (1965), ‘Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas’ from Blackmail (1973), and ‘O Haseena Zulfonwale Jane Jahan’ from Teesri Manzil (1966).
My camera listens to the song and moves with it.” – Vijay Anand
- Vijay made most of the films with ‘Navketan Films,’ the production company started by the Anand brothers themselves.
And as an active student of cinema, I want to learn and learn and learn, and in that state I feel… Why should anyone else write my story or screenplay or make my music? Because, every other man’s limitations are diluting and weakening my strength!” – Vijay Anand
- According to Vijay’s son, Vaibhav, Vijay Anand learnt scriptwriting from his elder brother Chetan Anand. [6]The Times of India
- Vijay Anand was a disciple of guru Rajneesh, a mystic and spiritual teacher; however, he stopped following him when he could not find Rajneesh helpful in solving his personal problems. According to Vijay Anand’s son, Vaibhav, Vijay had certain questions for Rajneesh, which he couldn’t answer, and Vijay realised that Rajneesh was not a God. Vijay lost his faith in Rajneesh completely when he asked Vijay to make a film about him. Vaibhav talked about this in an interview and said,
Dad realised there was something amiss about Rajneesh. He didn’t seem to be Bhagwan. Dad had certain questions for which Rajneesh had no answers. He got further disappointed with Rajneesh when he asked dad to make a film on him. Dad said, ‘Goodbye, thank you and f*** off!’ He realised the man was no longer spiritual. He’d turned materialistic. He wrote a letter to him saying this was not what he’d come to him for and left the ashram the next day.” [7]The Times of India
- Vijay Anand’s first wife, Loveleen, was a Russian. [8]Tabassum Talkies – YouTube According to sources, Vijay Anand got to know Loveleen when she came to hold an interview with him on behalf of Moscow radio. Vijay, enchanted with Loveleen’s beauty, offered her the lead role in the Hindi romantic film ‘Jaan Kazir Hai’ (1975). Loveleen started to bond with Vijay Anand during the making of the film. Vijay used to dress up as a disciple of Osho Rajneesh, a mystic and spiritual teacher, which took a shine to Loveleen, and eventually, Vijay introduced her to the teachings of Rajneesh. According to some sources, both of them would often visit Rajneesh’s ashram in Pune and spend around ten days a month. Loveleen’s faith in Rajneesh and her feelings for Vijay Anand kept growing, and she decided to move from Delhi to Rajneesh’s ashram in Pune. After realising her feelings for Vijay, Loveleen proposed to him; however, he declined the proposal by saying that he had nothing except for a couple of clothes and footwear with him. Loveleen’s decision of getting married to Vijay remained unchanged, and she later gave up the offer for the film ‘Jaan Hazir Hai,’ thinking that Vijay would not like his to be wife to act in the films. As per some sources, Loveleen kept convincing Vijay Anand to marry her and making him believe that spending her whole life with him was the only thing that mattered to her. Reportedly, guru Rajneesh called Vijay Anand and Loveleen to his private chamber one day and purportedly gave Loveleen’s hand in the hands of Vijay. Vijay Anand and Loveleen got married and led their married life in Pune with the blessings of guru Rajneesh. Their relationship was doing well until Loveleen expressed her desire to continue working in films and allegedly asked Vijay Anand to write a script which feature her as the heroine opposite a popular actor. Sources claim that Vijay did not pay much attention to Loveleen’s demand, which kept growing stronger over time. The demands evolved into acrimonious disagreements, and the duo began arguing often. According to some sources, Vijay was affected by frequent fights and arguments, and he decided to end his marriage.
- After parting ways with his first wife, Loveleen, Vijay Anand found love in his niece, Sushma (Kohli) Anand. A controversy was heated up when Vijay tied the knot with his niece, Sushma, as it was considered to be impermissible in Indian society.
- Vijay Anand served as the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), a statutory film-certification body in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India, for a short period of time. Reportedly, he resigned in 2002 after he ran into ideological differences with the government over the introduction of ratings for adult movies. [9]Hindustan Times
- According to reports, Vijay Anand’s kidney operation went poorly, leaving him bedridden for a year. In appreciation for the diligent nursing he received from his friend Amarjeet, Vijay offered him the opportunity to direct the 1961 film ‘Hum Dono.’ Amarjeet declined the offer. The movie was directed by Vijay Anand, who awarded Amarjeet the credit.
- According to Sushma, Vijay Anand’s wife, Vijay Anand loved to travel. In an interview, she revealed that Vijay loved wearing shirts and would often pick dozens at a time. She added, he had a passion for ballroom dancing, waltz and foxtrot, and as a youngster, he used to travel from Chetan Anand’s shack to a school in Colaba to learn the waltz.
- According to Sushma, Vijay Anand, with some knowledge of astrology, predicted that February 2004 (the month he passed away) would be a bad month for him.
