Some Lesser Known Facts About Razia Sultana
- Razia Sultana was born and grew up in a middle-class muslim family in Malerkotla, Punjab.
- After completing matriculation, she started her active participation in local politics.
- In early 2000, Sultana joined active politics in Punjab.
- Razia was elected three times as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in 2002, 2007, and 2017.
- Among all her wins, the 2017 victory was particularly notable as she won against her brother, Mohammad Arshad, who was contesting on an Aam Aadmi Party ticket.
- From 2017 to 2021, Sultana served as the transport minister under the cabinet of then Chief Minister Capt. Amrinder Singh.
- During her tenure as transport minister, she focused on dealing with the transport mafia and strongly took action against buses that were operated without proper permits. She also implemented a vehicle tracking system in government transport.
- She also launched road safety awareness campaigns and oversaw an employment recruitment campaign in Punjab Roadways.
- In 2021, Sultana was allotted the Water Supply and Sanitation, Social Security, Women & Child Development, and Printing & Stationery departments under Charanjit Singh Channi’s tenure as the Chief Minister of Punjab.
- In the Water and Supply Sanitation department, she superheaded the “Har Ghar Pani, Har Ghar Sfai Mission”, which aimed to provide clean drinking water to rural households.

- Recently, Razia Sultana again came into the news after the death of her only son, Aqil Akhtar, who was found dead in his residence at MDC, Sector 4, Panchkula, on 16 October 2025.
- Before his death, in August 2025, he had shared some videos on his social media accounts, where she shared his father, Mohammad Mustafa’s, alleged relationship with his wife (Aqil Akhtar). In the videos, he also shared that his mother, Razia Sultana, his sister, and his wife are all involved in this, and they wanted to kill him. However, in another video, he shared that he was suffering from schizophrenia, and his family is supporting him.
- During the initial investigation, the police didn’t find any “foul play” in her son’s death, and after the post-mortem, they handed over her son’s body to the family.
- On 17 October 2025, the case took a shocking turn when Shamshudeen Chaudhary, a resident of Malerkotla in Punjab, filed a complaint against Razia Sultana, her husband Mohammad Mustafa, her daughter, and her daughter-in-law (Aqil Akhtar’s wife). He alleged that they all poisoned him. Shamshudeen also presented social media videos shared by Aqil Akhtar in August 2025 as evidence to support his claims.
