• K.V. Vijay Damu worked as an auto driver for 15 years, before joining politics.

• In an interview K.V. Vijay Damu revealed that his real name didn’t include Vijay, he added it out of admiration for actor tuned politician Vijay. He said,

I added his name Vijay ahead of my name Damu.”

• During his early years, Damu was actively involved in social works like organizing blood donations camps and other welfare activities in the Royapuram area.

• Before entering the main stream politics, Vijay Damu was the district secretary of the North Chennai’s Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (Vijay Fan Club), where he handled the responsibility to convert Vijay’s fan organisation to a people focused movement.

• K.V. Vijay Damu won the seat with over 59,000 votes with a margin of 14,000 votes. Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party’s candidate A Subair Khan came at second position, and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)’s five-time MLA and former Finance Minister D Jayakumar finished at third.

• Damu’s victory was viewed as a rejection of traditional “dynasty and legacy” politics.

• After his win, in an interview, Damu said,

I didn’t win because I am a politician. I won because the people saw a brother, a son, and a driver who knows the price of a liter of petrol and the struggle for a square meal.”
