  • Arpita met Mohammed Hamim Mondal around four years back via Instagram. The two began talking online and eventually their discussion transferred to face-to-face.
  • This friendship later morphed into a romance, investigators say. Police said the two had been involved in a relationship long before the mention of a terror network had come into the picture.
  • On 30 July 2026, the West Bengal Police Special Task Force arrested Mondal from a rented flat at Renaissance Complex, near Durgapur Expressway in Burdwan district, in Purba Bardhaman district.
  • He was a resident of Kusumgram, Purba Bardhaman and employed in a garment factory in Pilkhana area of Howrah.
  • Investigators charge him with being part of a network that was connected to the banned Jaish e Mohammed (JeM) and had contact with handlers from Pakistan based handlers who were connected to the ISI.
  • He was often seen going to New Town in Kolkata and conducting recce of the routes followed by the West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, police said.
  • He is also accused of collecting data of BJP and RSS leaders in the state. A day after Mondal’s arrest, the STF picked up Arpita Sarkar from Sahibganj and brought her to Burdwan.
  • Investigators say she was Mondal’s close associate and girlfriend.
  • Upon introduction to the network by Mondal, handlers from Pakistan began instructing her as well, sometimes even communicating directly with her via encrypted social media messages, the STF said.
  • Police say Arpita actively participated in the honey trap operations targeting high-ranking government officials, political leaders and others.
  • It is said that her job was to gather phone numbers, take photos of houses and people and to do recce work.
  • According to investigators, the family of at least six sitting West Bengal cabinet ministers were targeted via her.
  • A separate and more serious charge of honey trapping and abductions for extortion of the son of a state minister by handlers of a Pakistan based group called Shahzad Bhatti Network is being investigated.
  • Investigators scoured Arpita’s bank transactions, mobile phones, laptop and social media conversations, as well as her travel history between Jharkhand and Kolkata in order to understand why Arpita was travelling so regularly and who she was meeting.
  • Chats found on the devices reportedly contain information about the plans for creating “unrest” near Jantar Mantar in Delhi, buying police uniforms, building ties with influential individuals.
  • Arpita was produced before a court in Purba Bardhaman on 1 August 2026. Aditya Singh, reportedly a second aide of Mondal, was also arrested by the STF on 3 August 2026.
  • He was scheduled to be produced the same day before the district court where the public prosecutor wanted his custody.
  • The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation in the case after 3 August when it questioned both Mondal and Sarkar.
