Some Lesser Known Facts About Robert Lovell

  • Robert Lovell is the owner and CEO of HMS, Inc.
  • Due to an accident that left Bob’s father permanently disabled when Bob was 11 years old, Bob found work after school, 6 days a week, to help his mother pay the rent. His father remained hospitalized for the next 3 years. Bob’s mother took a job washing clothes at the convent. It was not long after his dad’s accident that his mother was also hospitalized due to a fall down a flight of stairs at the convent carrying a heavy load of laundry.
  • From that day forward, Bob took over the financial duties of caring for the household bills; paying the rent and providing for the basic needs of his brother and sister who were both slow. Bob kept his job of selling magazines door to door for the next six years to cover the household expenses. The income was enough to cover expenses to stay together, with the schools never finding out that most of the time the 3 kids were home alone.
  • At 17 years old, Bob enlisted in the army with his mother signing for him. He graduated high school a year early in 1968 and served in the Army from 1968-1971. After his stint in the military for just over 2 years, he was granted a hardship discharge to go home and continue to support his two disabled parents. By that time his mother had her feet amputated due to diabetes.
  • Returning home, Bob went into the insurance business. Bob was very successful and was able to continue to cover the financial needs of his parents. Due to his success in insurance, Bob was offered a job in Europe testing the insurance needs of American soldiers serving overseas. This allowed him to better care for his family financially. He was able to purchase a home in Florida for his parents to move into, so they could escape the harsh Minnesota winters. Bob’s mother passed in 1992 and his father in 1994. After Bob’s father passed, he moved to Dallas, TX and decided to go into Real Estate.
  • Wanting to do a different kind of real estate, he helped form a company that would cater to clients who were renting and never thought they could own their own home. In January 1997, HMS (Home Marketing Services, Inc.) was formed. The concept was to help people who never had homeownership and felt they would always be renters. Over the next 20+ years, HMS has helped over 10,000 families get “out of the rent race” and become homeowners. The American Dream for them became a reality.
  • Bob’s brother was having a very rough time still in Minnesota. He was selling his furniture just to get the insulin he needed to stay alive. Bob moved him and his wife, Jan, to Florida and purchased them a small home. After several years, Bob improved his brother’s credit enough for his brother to purchase the home himself. Eventually, the diabetes his brother inherited took his foot, then his leg, and then his life.
  • Just as Bob has done with his family his whole life, Bob has carried that concept forward with HMS helping clients in need. Bob never had the opportunity to attend college because of the financial care of his parents and his siblings. It was always a dream of his to become a college graduate. Bob’s only daughter, on the other hand, has a double master. She followed his footsteps to serve in the military and continue her education.
  • HMS has faced many challenges over the past 28 years including the recession of 2008, the rise of interest rates recently, a shortage of inventory (housing) during COVID, a large theft of funds by an employee and two frivolous lawsuits looking for free money. However, the HMS mission remains intact. Help those in need of achieving the American dream of homeownership. Bob is known locally as the “Bless your Heart guy,” a most deserving title. His two favourite charities are for veterans and homeless shelters, to which he devotes time and money generously.
  • Bob is very active both personally and through his business in various charities. Through the years, Bob has worked with and donated to numerous veteran charities, such as The Wounded Warrior Foundation as well as charities benefiting the homeless shelters. Most recently, Bob and HMS donated over $10,000 to the Gospel Union Mission!
  • Bob and HMS have been supporters of Toys for Tots, delivering U-Haul trucks full of bikes and sporting equipment to children in need of toys for the Holidays.
  • Bob has also donated to various other charities in the DFW area.
  • Over the years Bob worked with world-famous artist and friend, Michael Godard to support charities such as St Jude’s and the Ronald McDonald House.
