- Champai Soren is an Indian politician who is known for being chosen to serve as the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand (Designate) in 2024 after the Enforcement Directorate arrested former Chief Minister Hemant Soren.
- He used to work on farms with his father and studied in a government school until class 10.
- He is a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha party member and serves as the representative for the Seraikella Assembly constituency in Jharkhand.
- He has been the legislator for the Serikela Assembly area since 1991, over 30 years, and is known for his strong loyalty to JMM leader Shibu Soren.
- He played a major role in the Bihar-Jharkhand partition and shaped the map.
- In 2019, Babulal Soren, son of Champai got into an argument with the police during a vehicle inspection. He got furious when the police asked him to check his car. Babulal was travelling from Jamshedpur to Ghatshila-Musabani with his followers. He threatened the police officer about his powerful position and warned him to get him suspended. However, the police officer insisted on checking Babulal Soren’s vehicle anyway.
- In January 2023, he was flown in a special plane to a hospital in Chennai from Sonari Aerodrome. He was taken to Tata Main Hospital because his blood sugar level went up a lot on January 14th. According to the doctors at Tata Main Hospital, there was no improvement in his health so he was sent to DMS in Chennai.
- On 31 January 2024, Hemant Soren stepped down from his position as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand. This happened after officials from the Enforcement Directorate came to his house in Ranchi to ask him questions about a case involving land fraud. Soren went to the Raj Bhavan at about 8:30 in the evening, met with Governor CP Radhakrishnan along with the ED officials, and handed in his resignation.
- Hemant was arrested because he did not show up for questioning by the ED, even though they had sent him notices related to their investigation into a supposed money laundering case. The first time he was questioned was in November 2021 about illegal mining. The other two times were on 20 January 2023 and 31 January 2023, about money that came from illegal land deals in Ranchi.
- On 31 January 2024, Champai was chosen to serve as the 7th Chief Minister of Jharkhand (Designate). Many people thought Hemant Soren would suggest his wife for the Chief Minister’s role. However, after talks among his party and Congress leaders, they chose Champai as the new leader instead.
- JMM leader and MP Mahua Maji claimed Hemant was taken into ED custody. In a statement released by her, she said,
The CM is in ED custody. The CM has gone to the Governor with the ED team to submit his resignation… Champai Soren will be the new Chief Minister… We have enough numbers.”
- Champai was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand on 2 February 2024.
