  • Jaya Verma Sinha is a 1986-batch Indian Railway Traffic Service official. She came into the public attention after she represented the Indian Railways and spoke to the media, explaining how the train signals worked following the tragic Balasore accident. In March 2018, she became the first woman to be appointed as the Principal Chief Operations Manager of South Eastern Railway. In August 2023, she made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of CEO and Chairperson of the Railway Board.
  • Her family has its ancestral home at Baghambari Housing Scheme in Allapur.
  • She grew up in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, where she received her formal education.

  • She then served as the Railway Adviser in the High Commission of India in Dhaka, Bangladesh, for around four years. As the advisor, she played a vital role in the inauguration of the Maitree Express, a train that travels on the Kolkata-Dhaka route.
  • In 2011, she began working as the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Northern Railway in New Delhi. She worked there for a year.

  • Jaya served as the Senior Deputy General Manager of South Eastern Railway at Garden Reach in Kolkata, West Bengal, from 2016 to 2018.
  • In March 2018, she became the first woman to hold the position of the Principal Chief Operations Manager in the South Eastern Railway.
  • In June 2020, Jaya was appointed as the Principal Chief Commercial Manager at Northern Railways. She held the position till January 2023.
  •  In August 2021, Jaya started working as Advisor Traffic Transportation and Additional Member Traffic in the Railway Ministry. While working there, she held the responsibility for the overall transportation of freight and passenger services. Apparently, during her tenure, Indian Railways saw an all-time high growth of over 20 per cent in the freight segment, breaking the mark of 1.5 billion tonnes annually in freight. Jaya was also given a freight loading target of 2,000 million tonnes (mt) for the coming years.

  • In January 2023, Jaya was named as a Member of Operations & Business Development of the Railway Board in the Ministry of Railways, Government of India.
  • In June 2023, during the tragic Balasore accident, Jaya became the face of the Indian Railways in front of the media and explained the complex signalling system of the Indian Railways to the people. In the accident, around 300 people lost their lives.

  • On 31 August 2023, she was announced as the CEO and Chairperson of the Railway Board. She became the first woman to hold the post since the Indian Railways Board came into existence. She assumed the office on 1 September 2023, replacing Anil Kumar Lahoti. Her appointment letter reads,

    The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Jaya Verma Sinha, Indian Railway Management Services (IRMS), Member (Operations & Business Development), Railway Board to the post of Chairman & Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Railway Board.”

    Although she was set to retire on 1 October 2023, according to some sources, she would be re-employed on the day of her retirement until 31 August 2024.
