- Kalanithi grew up in a politically influential family.
- In 1990, he started a monthly Tamil video magazine, Poomaalai.
- In 1992, he founded Sun Group, a media company.
- When Bill Clinton, the then President of the United States, visited India in March 2000, Kalanithi Maran was among the few representatives present at a round-table discussion with him.
- With an investment of USD 86,000 from a bank loan guaranteed by his father and his own savings, Maran founded Sun TV on 14 April 1993.
- Sun Network was among the first to procure the license for satellite broadcasting.
