• Kyathasandra N. Rajanna began working in the cooperative sector in 1972 and started his political career the same year as Secretary of the Kyathasandra Taluk Congress unit.

• In 1976, Rajanna became President of the Kyathasandra Town Panchayat and served in this role for several years.

• From 1980 to 1984, he was President of the Youth Congress wing in the Tumkur District unit of the Indian National Congress.

• After being denied an INC ticket in 2004 from Bellavi, he joined the Janata Dal (Secular) and contested elections. In 2004, he was elected MLA from Bellavi constituency as a JD(S) candidate and served until the seat was abolished in 2008.

• Rajanna served as President of the Tumakuru District Central Co-operative Bank Ltd. for five terms during his career.

• In 2007, he returned to the Indian National Congress after leaving the Janata Dal (Secular) the same year. In the 2013 Karnataka Assembly elections, he won from Madhugiri constituency representing the Indian National Congress.

• On 12 August 2015, he was unanimously elected President of the Karnataka State Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. for a second term, serving until September 2020.

• He served as Vice Chairman of the National Federation of State Cooperative Banks Ltd. (NAFSCOB), Mumbai, and Director of NAFED, New Delhi.

• He founded several cooperative institutions including KNR Souharda Credit Co-operative Societies and KNR Organic Farming Produce and Marketing Co-operative Society. In the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, he again won from Madhugiri on an Indian National Congress ticket.

• On 27 May 2023, Rajanna was appointed Cabinet Minister for Cooperation (excluding Agricultural Marketing) in the second term of Siddaramaiah‘s Ministry.

• On Saturday in Tumakuru, as Cooperation Minister, Rajanna admitted to voter list irregularities during the Congress government’s tenure in Karnataka.

• He questioned why the Congress had not filed objections when draft electoral rolls were prepared during its rule. His remarks contradicted Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that “vote theft” in Mahadevapura during the 2023 elections was done by the BJP with Election Commission help.

• The comments led to internal criticism in Congress for undermining its narrative against BJP and the Election Commission.

• On 11 August 2025, CM Siddaramaiah wrote to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot recommending Rajanna’s removal from the cabinet. By evening the same day, Governor Gehlot accepted the recommendation and removed Rajanna from the Karnataka cabinet.

• Rajanna said the Congress High Command had decided to drop him and called the move a political conspiracy within the party. He later softened his stance, stating he supported Rahul Gandhi’s “vote theft” allegations and planned to meet party leadership in New Delhi.

• His areas of interest include cooperative movement, formation of Self Help Groups, agriculture, organic farming, rural development, and social service.
