Salih, who is the son of a 10-time elected MP from Lakshadweep, Congress leader PM Sayeed, suffered serious injuries in the attack. On 11 January 2023, he was found guilty of attempted murder by a sessions court in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep along with 3 others out of 37 people who were accused. He was sentenced to jail for 10 years. This resulted in his disqualification from the Lok Sabha. [3]NDTV Arrested Under the Disaster Management Act In November 2021, he participated in a protest with NCP members against the increase in prices of essential services and public transport by the administration. This resulted in his arrest with charges of public nuisance, disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant, negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life, and Disaster Management Act. [4]The Wire CBI filed a case of corruption CBI alleged irregularities in tuna fish sales, resulting in Rs. 6 crore to the fishermen and filed a case of corruption against Mohammed Faizal in July 2022. CBI claimed that LCMF suffered heavy loss as the correct tender process and the formalities weren't followed by Mohammed Faizal and a few members of the Lakshadweep Co-operative Marketing Federation (LCMF )when the tuna fish was exported to Sri Lanka-based SRT General Merchants where Faizal's nephew, Abdul Razik works. Denying the allegations in an interview, Faizal claimed that he had provided the documents required by the CBI but they haven't reported any recovery. Some Lesser Known Facts About Mohammed Faizal
- While studying at Sir Syed College, Kerala, he was elected the Secretary of Fine Arts of the College Union in 1996.
- He began his career as a business advisor after completing his MBA. Later, he entered the world of politics.
- He organised ASCEND 99, a South India Business School Management meet at Calicut University in 1999. The event was attended by the top 10 South Indian business schools.
- Mohammed Faizal led multiple protests in 2021 against Lakshadweep administrator, Praful Khoda Patel, claiming that the rules he was implementing were anti-people. In an interview, he requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a new administrator and said,
Praful Khoda Patel is implementing all the anti-people rules and regulations. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should listen to the outcry of the local people and send in a new Administrator. - Faizal wrote a petition to the Kerala High Court to suspend his conviction and avoid his disqualification as an MP, as this would result in a by-election. The Kerala High Court, on 25 January 2023, suspended the conviction of Faizal and others involved until the disposal of the appeal, calling the circumstances rare.
- Observing that it is important to decriminalise politics and to avoid expensive by-elections for society’s benefit at the same time, the Kerala High Court said,
Decriminalisation of politics is an essential requirement of every democracy. As a constitutional court, it is the bounden duty to advance constitutional objectives, including purity in politics. However, those lofty principles cannot be the reason for denying the application of the principles of rule of law. The societal interest in averting an expensive election, that too, when the elected candidate can continue for a limited period alone if the fresh election is conducted, cannot be brushed aside by this court.”
- Supreme Court requested reconsideration of Faizal’s suspension to Kerala High Court in August 2023. Faizal’s conviction was stayed by the High Court on 4 October 2023, disqualifying him as an MP.
