Extra-marital affair
Nalin Kumar Kateel hit the headlines in 2014 after it was revealed that he was having an affair with a married woman from Mangaluru. His relationship came into the spotlight after Sathish Shetty, the husband of the woman with whom Nalin was in a relationship, filed a complaint against Nalin. In his complaint, Shetty accused Nalin of cajoling Shetty's wife for filing a false charge of dowry harassment against him. Nalin; however, denied the allegations against him and called it a "political conspiracy against him." [2]India Today

Calling Rajiv Gandhi a "murderer"
Nalin hit the headlines in 2019 when he called Rajiv Gandhi a "gruesome murderer" via a tweet. In his tweet, Nalin drew comparison between Rajiv, Nathuram Godse, and the 2008 Mumbai attacks terrorist Ajmal Kasab and said that while Kasab and Godse killed lesser number of people, Rajiv Gandhi killed more than 17,000 people. His tweet read,

"Godse killed just one. Ajmal Kasab killed 72. Rajiv Gandhi killed 17,000. Now you tell us who is most gruesome murderer?"

For his tweet, Nalin faced flak not only from the Indian National Congress (INC) and the netizens but also from the Home Minister of India Amit Shah. He later deleted his tweet and asked people for their forgiveness. [3]The Times of India While apologizing, he said,

"I have observed that people have been expressing their anguish over my tweets. I tender my apology if anyone is hurt by it. I have no intention of hurting anyone. I have withdrawn my tweet soon after realizing that it has hurt people. Let us end this discussion here."

Threatening to burn Dakshina Kannada down
In January 2017, an FIR was registered by Karnataka Police against Nalin under section 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC. As per sources, the FIR was registered by the cops on the jurisdictional magistrate court's instruction after Nalin, during a political rally on 2 January 2017, threatened to set Dakshina Kannada on fire if the cops did not catch the killers of Karthik Raj, a BJP worker, within ten days. Calling Siddaramaiah and the Indian National Congress supporters of terrorism
Nalin, in an interview in March 2018, accused Siddaramaiah of not only supporting terrorism in the state of Karnataka but also of giving a "go-ahead" to the killings of many Hindu activists in the state. His statement came in response to Siddaramaiah equating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the RSS, and the Bajrang Dal with Taliban during a rally in March 2018. Nalin further targeted the INC and Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and claimed that India saw a sharp increase in terrorism due to Indira Gandhi's support to extremist like Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. [5]Outlook Taking about it, he said,

"In this country, the source of motivation for terrorism is the Congress; Indira Gandhi created terrorists through Bhindranwale (Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale), So, the Congress supported terrorism, Indira Gandhi created terrorists, but the chief minister of this state has exceeded all this and himself has become a terrorist. I will say that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is a terrorist."

Passing bizarre comments on Rahul Gandhi
In 2021, after Karnataka Congress issued a statement in which it called Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, an "angootha chaap" (illiterate), Nalin Kumar Kateel called Rahul Gandhi a "drug peddler," who has addicted to drugs. He also asked Rahul to focus on running the INC and not on PM Modi. [6]The Times of India He talked about it in an interview and said,

"Who is Rahul Gandhi? He is a drug peddler and an addict. I am not saying it. There has been a media report in this regard."

In March 2023, at Ramanagara, Karnataka, Kateel, while attending the BJP’s 'Jana Sankalpa Yatra,' took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi and said that Rahul did not marry as he was "sterile." He also lambasted Siddaramaiah for attempting to dissuade the public from taking COVID-19 shots. For his remarks against Rahul Gandhi, Kateel received a backlash from the Indian National Congress as well as the senior BJP leaders. [7]Hindustan Times He talked about it and said,

"What did Rahul Gandhi say? Rahul Gandhi and (former Karnataka CM) Siddaramaiah asked people not to take the COVID vaccine as they will not be able to produce children. But Rahul and Siddaramaiah secretly took the vaccine at night."

Giving brazen remarks during the 2023 Karnataka Vidhan Sabha polls' campaigning
In January 2023, while inaugurating BJP's Booth Vijay Abhiyaan, Kateel congratulated the BJP-led central government for banning the Popular Front of India (PFI) and gave a controversial remark in which he said that the real issue in Karnataka was not of the development of infrastructure like roads and sewers but of "love jihad." [8]The Indian Express In his speech, he said,

"So I told them not to talk about roads, gutters, drains and other small issues…. If the issue concerning your children’s lives — love jihad — has to be stopped, then we need the BJP (to form the government). Had the PFI not been banned, today we wouldn’t have BJP leaders Monappa Bhandary and Hari Krishna Bantwal (of Dakshina Kannada) on stage. MLA Vedavyas Kamath would not have been here. There would have only been a garland over their photos."

While addressing a rally at Yalaburga in February 2023, he once again hit the headlines after he asked the supporters of the BJP to attack and kill those who support Tipu Sultan, the ruler of the Mysore state. He further raised questions over the INC's intent for allowing the celebration of the Tipu Sultan Jayanti in parts of Karnataka and asked the INC whether they preffered Tipu over Savarkar. Thereafter, he took a jibe at the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka D. K. Shivakumar and said that he, through his statements, had earlier claimed Mohammed Shariq, the mastermind of the 2022 Mangaluru cooker blast case, to be innocent. [9]The Times of India [10]Mint In his speech, he said,

"Take oath whether you want Tipu Sultan’s children or the devotees of Lord Rama and Anjaneya in this state. I am asking you this question in the holy town of Anjaneya that those who love Tipu should not stay in this land. Only those who sing Rama Bhajan (devotional songs) should remain here."
