Some Lesser Known Facts About Naezy
- Naezy hails from a lower-middle-class orthodox Muslim family and was brought up in the chawls of Mumbai.
- His family has been residing in the Chawl area of Kurla, Mumbai since 1935.
- Since his childhood, he was never interested in studies and often roamed with his friends. Naezy got into bad company while studying in school.
- When he was 13 years old, he was caught by a policeman who wanted to take him to the nearby police station. When they were waiting at a railway crossing, Naezy kicked the policeman in the groin and boarded the passing train.
- His parents were worried about his well-being and later sent him to a boarding school in Patna but he came back to Mumbai after 2 months.
- He was once arrested by police on the charges of teasing a girl and spent one night in jail where he was beaten and tortured. His uncle later bailed him out but this incident forced him to find a purpose in his life.
- The first rap song he heard was the song “Temperature” by Jamaican rapper Sean Paul at a marriage event in his locality. He often performed the song during school lunch breaks to impress girls.
- Soon after, he adopted the stage name”Naezy the Baa”, which means “Naezy the Crazy” and he started writing and practising rap music by replicating the styles and lyrics of rappers like Lil Wayne and Sean Paul.
- His paternal grandfather, Sheikh Hamza, used to sit with him every morning and make him read the Free Press Journal and an Urdu newspaper, The Inquilab, due to which he developed an interest in politics and social issues.
- In college days, he, along with his friends, formed a hip-hop group called ‘The Schizophrenics.’
- Once, his father had sent an iPad from Dubai, so he could have a chat with his family in Mumbai via Skype. Naezy used it as a tool to record his first single “Aafat,” and on 7 January 2014, he released it on YouTube, which received more than 3.5 million views.
- Within a year of his first single’s release, he earned a deal with, Only Much Louder, an artist and event management company.
- He gave his live performance in front of over 18,000 fans at the NH7 Weekender festival in Pune. He later performed in several live concerts.
- His career breakthrough came in 2015 when he collaborated with a fellow rapper, Vivian Fernandes, better known by his stage name “Divine.” The gully boys from different slum areas of Mumbai made their first collaboration as ‘Divine and Naezy’ and released the song “Mere Gully Mein” (In My Streets), which became such a big hit that it was termed the “Mumbai rap anthem.”
- His relatives did not want him to do rap as they believed that it was a sin according to Islamic traditions. His mother once told his aunt that he rapped but she misunderstood it for ‘rape’ after which her mother clarified his profession.
- He is proficient in Urdu, Hindi, English, Marathi, and Arabic.
- According to Naezy, the director of the film, Zoya Akhtar, first heard him during the editing of ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ (2015). After hearing his music and story, she decided to make a film based on the lives of Mumbai’s street rappers. In 2019, she made a biographical musical film ‘Gully Boy,’ which was inspired by rappers, including Divine and Naezy.
- He later took a break from rapping as his family and many people in his neighbourhood who followed Islam did not want him to sing or rap. He went to Dubai where he worked with his father.
- His father saw his passion for rapping, and Naezy convinced him that he could not stay away from rap and music, hence he returned to India and again started making music in 2019. He likes the underground rap in the Desi Hip Hop (DHH) scene.
- In March 2024, he said that he received benefits in his career due to the ‘Gully Boy’ film but some parts of his film like his father getting married for the second time and that he cheated on his girlfriend were false and affected him mentally.
- In June 2024, he appeared in the Indian reality TV show ‘Bigg Boss OTT Season 3’ as a contestant, which aired on Jio Cinema.
- Naezy once said in an interview that he liked rapping about social issues instead of girls and cars like many singers.
