Some Lesser Known Facts About Rey Mysterio

  • Rey Mysterio was born in a very poor household that found it difficult to make ends meet.
  • As a child, he used to go to school in San Diego, where he used to reach by crossing the Tijuana border on foot.
  • As a teenager, he decided to persuade his parents to allow him to drop out of school to become a professional wrestler and bodybuilder. Initially, they were against this decision; however, later, they decided to allow him and supported him.
  • He considers his uncle, Rey Misterio, Sr., as his inspiration. Mysterio has been wrestling since the age of 14 and has spent nearly 3 decades inside the squared ring.
  • Initially, Rey Mysterio participated in freestyle wrestling competitions in Mexico. However, on his uncle’s persuasion, he started learning the Lucha Libre, a freestyle high-flying wrestling style that has been his trademark.
  • Although Rey Mysterio is known as the Master of ‘619’ (Finisher), he wasn’t the one who invented it. The 619 is inspired by ‘The Tiger Feint’ finisher, which was originally used by wrestler ‘Tiger Mask’ aka Satoru Sayama.
  • In 1991, while wrestling in Colibri, the wrestlers there named him “Most Improved Wrestler.” This was after he was given the ring name Rey Misterio Jr. by his uncle.
  • From 1992 to 1996, Rey Mysterio performed in the ring with his uncle at the Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA). There, they mostly performed in tag team matches often against Juventud “Juvi” Guerrera and his father Fuerza Guerrera.

  • Rey challenged Prine laukea (also known as The Artist) in February 1997 for a shot at the WCW World Television Championship. The two fought against one another at SuperBrawl VII in which Mysterio faced defeat and lost his opportunity to win the title belt.
  • He re-fought for the title in the March of the same year at the event “Uncensored.” However, he lost the match.
  • While wrestling at WCW, Mysterio is known for fighting against the famous faction New World Order (nWo), consisting of Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash. He also started a feud with Eddie Guerrero, who went on to become a good real-life friend of Rey.
  • In 1997, an American magazine posted a completely fabricated article about Mysterio having an affair with actress Jennifer Anniston. Instead of confronting Mysterio, his wife laughed after reading the article. She said that doubting a husband as loyal as Mysterio would be a ‘sin’.

  • In October 1997, Rey and Eddie fought for the Cruiserweight Championship title. The match had a condition that whoever lost the match had to remove his mask and reveal the face. Rey defeated Eddie in the match and became the title holder for the second time.
  • He lost the title to Eddie again in November of the same year during the Nitro event of WCW.
  • In January 1998, he faced off against and defeated Juventud in a match for the Cruiserweight Championship title.
  • He lost the title in the same month to Chris Jericho at the Souled Out event.
  • Thereafter, he sustained a knee injury for which he underwent surgery and had to stay out of the ring for six months.
  • In July 1998, he returned to the ring and challenged Chris for a rematch. The match was held on 12 July in which Chris faced defeat resulting in Mysterio becoming the title holder for the third time. He, however, lost the title on 13 July to Chris, who won the rematch because of external interference.
  • In the same year, Eddie offered Rey a membership in the Latino World Order (LWO), similar to the New World Order stable. However, Rey declined his offer as a result of which the in-ring relations between the two deteriorated. He, however, later had to join the stable after losing a match with Eddie, who had put a condition on the match that if he defeated Rey he would have to take the membership of the stable.
  • In December of the same year, Mysterio was unsuccessful in defending his Cruiserweight title against Kidman. Rey was unsuccessful in regaining his championship from Kidman in January 1999.
  • In February 1999, Mysterio was challenged to a tag team Hair vs. Mask match by the nWo, which managed to defeat him as a result of which he had to remove his mask and reveal his face for the first time in his career.
  • In an interview, given later, Rey Mysterio expressed his disappointment over the management’s decision to remove his mask in the ring. He also claimed that he had expressed his disapproval of the same. He said,

    I was strongly against it! I don’t think WCW understood what the mask meant to me, to my fans and to my family. It was a very bad move on their behalf. The fans wanted Rey Mysterio with the mask and losing it hurt me a lot. It was also frustrating that it didn’t come as the climax to a feud with another masked wrestler, but in a throwaway match.”

  • For the remaining time of his at the WCW, he came to be known as “The Giant Killer” as he was able to defeat larger opponents like Kevin Nash, Bam Bam Bigelow, and Scott Norton.
  • He became a fourth-time Cruiserweight title holder in March 1999 after defeating Kidman at the Nitro event. With this, he earned the opportunity to challenge the then-Heavyweight WCW Champion Ric Flair.
  • In the same month, Rey Mysterio teamed up with Kidman to contest the WCW Tag Team Championship title. In the match for the title, the duo managed to defeat Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko.
  • In April 1999, Mysterio was defeated by Psicosis in a fatal four-way match when the latter challenged him for a Cruiserweight title match. However, Rey regained his title for the fifth time after defeating Psicosis in a one-on-one match the following day.
  • Thereafter, Kidman and Rey were challenged by Chris, Dean, Raven, and Perry Saturn for a tag team championship title match in a triangle match. The match took place on 9 May in which Rey and Kidman were defeated by Raven and Perry.
  • In June 1999, Rey decided to become a member of the No Limit Soldiers, a stable started by Master P. This took place because the LWO was disbanded. While wrestling for the stable, Mysterio and other members often fought with the members of the West Texas Rednecks, mostly in tag team matches.
  • After some months, he and Eddie left the stable and started a new stable called Filthy Animals. The reason for the duo leaving No Limit Soldiers was the rise in internal conflicts among the members after Master P left WCW and retired.

  • After his tenth match at the CMLL, Rey decided to move back to the US. There, he became a member of the Independent Wrestling Association (IWA) Mid-South.   • The duo took on the Basham Brothers in the No Way Out series in February 2005 and won the tag team champion title.

  • As the conflict between Eddie and Rey intensified, Eddie started threatening Rey by claiming he would reveal a “secret” about Rey’s son, Dominik. In response, Rey challenged Eddie to a match with the terms that if he were to lose, Eddie would not disclose the secret.
  • Despite getting defeated in a one-on-one match, Eddie revealed that Rey was not the “biological” father of Dominik, but he was. Thereafter, Eddie and his lawyer served the notice of handing over the custody of Dominik to Rey following which Rey challenged Eddie to a ladder in a steel cage match to determine who would have Dominik’s custody.
  • In the match, held in September 2005, Rey defeated Eddie and got to keep his son’s custody.
  • Despite having a feud with Eddie in the ring, they both were good and close friends in real life. In November 2005, when Eddie passed away, Rey gave an emotional speech at SmackDown! and Raw. He went on to remove his mask in Eddie’s memory; however, he kept his face hidden and did not reveal it as according to his WWE contract, he was not supposed to show his face to the public.
  • He then fought with Shawn Michaels and defeated him. After the match, he dedicated his win to Eddie while pointing towards the sky and crying.
  • In November 2005, he was chosen among a few wrestlers to be a member of Team SmackDown! to participate in a Survivor Series match against Team Raw. He participated along with Randy Orton, Bobby Lashley, Batista, and John “Bradshaw” Layfield (JBL). They went on to emerge victorious.
  • Rey Mysterio has been a part of a Hollywood movie. His part, however, lasted for a few seconds only as he played a stunt double in the 2005 film Freddy vs. Jason.
  • His affiliation with Raw further increased after he fought against the Big Show in an elimination match titled David vs. Goliath. Rey won the match; however, after Big Show’s partner Kane intervened in the match, the match was declared as no contest.

  • The duo lost their tag team title to MNM in a title re-match in December 2005 after wrestler Mark Henry interfered in the match.

  • The opportunity was later put at stake after Randy Orton instigated Mysterio to do so by giving derogatory remarks against his deceased friend Eddie.
  • The duo clashed at the WrestleMania 22 in which Rey lost the title shot to Randy. However, later, he regained the opportunity to challenge when the WWE Manager re-added Mysterio to the WrestleMania title match.
  • On 2 April 2006, Rey went against Randy and the then-Heavyweight title holder Kurt Angle and managed to defeat them; hence, becoming the World Champion for the first time. He went on to defend his championship from both, Randy and Kurt. Rey was named as the “Underdog Champion” due to the WWE Manager’s role in his title re-match.
  • In June of the same year, he went against the Cruiserweight Champion Gregory Helms in a Champion vs. Champion match and defeated him. This was the first of this type of match introduced in WWE.
  • He went on to defend his title against heavyweight-class wrestlers like Sabu, Mark Henry, and Chavo Guerrero.
  • He then developed a feud with Booker T (known as King Booker in the ring).   • Later, in the same year, Rey challenged Punk to a one-on-one no-rules fight in which if he pinned Punk, he would have to have his head shaved. Punk was defeated and had to get his head shaved in the ring.
  • In June 2010, he faced off against Punk, Jack Swagger, and the Big Show in a Fatal 4-Way; he pinned the other three wrestlers and won the World Heavyweight Championship title for the second time.
  • He lost the title to Kane 28 days later, who defeated Rey after encashing his money in the bank which he had won against Rey’s title after the latter fought against Swagger. In August of the same year, he challenged Kane for a rematch but was defeated.
  • WWE created a storyline filled with feud between Cody Rhodes and Mysterio after the latter mistakenly broke Cody’s nose while performing his signature move 619. This accident was used to further their storyline of an in-ring enmity. However, their feud came to an end in just six months as it was not well received by the viewers.
  • In 2011, he participated in the WWE draft and was drafted into the Raw brand. He and CM Punk were both taken into the same brand as a result of which they started their in-ring enmity.

  • After resuming wrestling after suspension, he challenged The Miz for the Intercontinental title shot twice, first at SummerSlam in August and then at the Night of Champions event in September; he was defeated both times.
  • After the loss, he formed a tag team with Sin Cara, and they both developed a feud with The Prime Time Players, consisting of Titus O’Neil and Darren Young.
  • The team broke when the duo were defeated by The Shield in December 2012. As per WWE, the decision to end their team was taken for Sin Cara to undergo knee surgery and Rey to go on a vacation with his family.
  • Rey returned in March 2013 but had to leave WWE for knee surgery which he sustained during a practice match.
  • In October 2013, he returned to WWE after being cleared safe for wrestling. Initially, till the time he recovered, Rey took part in the matches as a Spanish commentator.
  • His first match after the injury was the 10-man elimination chamber in November 2013 in which he faced off against The Wyatt Family and The Real Americans. In it, he teamed up with CM Punk and Daniel Bryan but was defeated.
  • Thereafter, he had an argument with Daniel and Punk as a result of which the team was disbanded. He then teamed up with The Big Show and the duo, in December 2013, challenged Cody Rhodes and Goldust for the WWE Tag Team Championship title. They, however, were defeated.
  • In April 2014, citing a wrist injury, Rey took a medical leave from the WWE. According to sources, he had expressed his desire to leave the company; however, the WWE denied his request and extended his contract without his prior approval. Due to this, the relations between him and WWE worsened. It was also reported that he had planned on joining another wrestling company known as the Lucha Underground in Los Angeles.
  • In February 2015, WWE issued a statement in which it claimed that Rey would not work with the organisation as his contract had expired. This ended his 13-year-old stint with the company.
  • Rey joined the Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide in Los Angeles in March 2015. There, he teamed up with his old WWE tag team partner Sin Cara.
  • In the same month, he performed a dropkick stunt on the back of a wrestler named Perro Aguayo Jr., which resulted in three fractured vertebrae and led to internal bleeding that caused his death in the ring. As per sources, Rey began blaming himself for Perro’s death and began contemplating leaving wrestling as a career.
  • Before the Lucha Libre World Cup, held in May 2015, Rey joined the Dream Team with Myzteziz and El Patrón Alberto. The trio went on to win the cup by defeating a team which consisted of Matt Hardy.
  • At the beginning of 2016, Rey Mysterio left AAA due to issues related to his payment. Despite not being a part of the organisation, Rey continued to appear occasionally in events hosted by the AAA.
  • Following his departure from AAA, he went to wrestle independently for Qatar Pro Wrestling, House of Glory, WCPW Pro Wrestling, 5 Star Wrestling, and Xtreme Wrestling Alliance (XWA).
  • Thereafter, he left independent wrestling and joined Lucha Underground, LLC. He wrestled in the organisation for three seasons and decided not to renew his contract for the fourth one.
  • In 2018, he joined the New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) in its Dominion 6.9 in Osaka-jo Hall show.
  • Later, in the same year, he went back to AAA, where he took part in several matches but did not perform well in them.
  • He left AAA and rejoined the WWE in 2018. Before formally appearing on the WWE payroll, he made two surprise appearances at Royal Rumble on 28 January and Greatest Royal Rumble on 27 April; he lost both matches.
  • In September 2018, WWE formally announced Rey Mysterio’s return to the organisation. He joined the SmackDown! Stable.
  • Soon after entering WWE, he entered into a feud with Randy Ortan which further escalated when Orton frequently began to attack Rey in his matches leading to him losing the match.
  • Later, he was chosen as one of the members of Team SmackDown! against Team Raw at the Survivor Series. In it, Mysterio lost to Braun Strowman which led to the defeat of Team SmackDown!
  • His altercation with Randy Orton came to an end in December 2018 when the latter was pinned at a TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs match.
  • In March 2019, he challenged Samoa Joe for a United States Championship title match. However, he failed to win the title as he was defeated by Joe, who pinned Rey in under one minute.
  • In the same year, a Super Star Shake-up event took place in which Mysterio was shifted from SmackDown! to Raw. There, he won the WWE Grand Slam Champion title from Joe.
  • In June 2019, he had to return the title to Joe as he had to leave WWE for some time to undergo a knee surgery.
  • Upon returning in September of the same year, Rey challenged Seth Rollins for a shot at the WWE Universal Champion title. Rey earned the opportunity to challenge Rollins after he won a fatal five-way elimination match. However, Rey was not able to participate in a title match as he sustained an injury after Brock Lesnar attacked Rey and his son Dominik.
  • This led to an on-and-off ring feud between Brock and Rey. Their feud escalated when Rey started interfering in Lesnar’s matches on SmackDown! despite Rey being part of Raw. As a result, Lesnar left SmackDown! and moved to Raw, seeking revenge on Mysterio.
  • In November 2019, he once again gained the opportunity to challenge for a shot at the WWE Universal Champion title by winning a fatal-four-way match. He went on to defeat A. J. Styles to win the title.
  • Styles and Rey developed a feud over the title and the former challenged Rey to several title re-matches; however, Mysterio was successful in defending his title each time. However, Rey was able to keep the title with him for less than a month as he was defeated by Manuel Alfonso Andrade Oropeza.
  • Rey later made two unsuccessful attempts to challenge Andrade but was defeated each time.
  • Rey and Seth developed a feud in May 2020 during which Seth caused Rey to be admitted to a hospital after the former “pierced” Rey’s eyes during a match.
  • In August of the same year, Rey with his son formed a tag team group called The Mysterios.
  • In 2021, the duo won their first WWE SmackDown! Tag Team Championship. With this Dominik and Rey became the first father-and-son team to become tag team champions in the history of WWE.
  • The duo lost the title to The Usos during a Money in the Bank match within three months. Thereafter, the duo were drafted into the Raw brand, where they began feuding with The Miz. In the WWE in-show, Miz TV, hosted by The Miz, he claimed that Dominik was not Rey’s son and that somebody else was the biological father.
  • The feud between Rey and The Miz ended in February 2022 as WWE discontinued their storyline. As per sources, the WWE decided to quit their storyline to introduce Logan Paul into the franchise.
  • Thereafter, he developed a feud with the villainous stable The Judgment Day after Finn Balor, Damian Priest, and Rhea Ripley tried to lure Dominik to leave his father and join them.
  • Later, he and wrestler Edge formed a tag team and began actively feuding with The Judgement Day.
  • The tag team of Rey and his son ended when Dominik turned on Rey in the ring.
  • In October 2022, Rey was transferred from Raw to SmackDown! As per sources, he was transferred as he refused to fight Dominik.
  • At SmackDown!, Mysterio won the Intercontinental Championship match; however, he lost the title in less than a month.
  • In March 2023, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as a part of the Class of 2023.
  • Later, in the same year, Mysterio founded the Latino World Order (LWO) in SmackDown! To counter The Judgement Day, Rey formed an alliance between the LWO and the Legado Del Fantasma (LDF), which was a villainous stable.
  • He then fought against his LWO teammate Escobar in July 2023 for the United States Title Invitational Tournament. He lost the match after being disqualified by the referee.
  • He won his third United States Championship in August 2023. The next month, he faced off against Austin Theory, who challenged him to a title match; Rey won the match and retained the title.
  • In November of the same year, he lost his title to Logan Paul, who used brass knuckles.
  • Thereafter, he took a break for three months.
  • In 2024, he and his stable LWO were drafted in Raw from SmackDown!
  • Mysterio sports several tattoos on his body. Every brush of ink on his body has some history or meaning associated with it. Not only has he tattooed the word ‘Mexican’ to show that he is proud of his country & heritage, but he also has a cross on his chest, which stands as a testimony to his religious beliefs. As a tribute to late wrestler Eddie Guerrero, he sports the initials ‘EG’. In addition, he even has his children’s names inked on his arms.

  • With as many as 8 Cruiserweight titles, Mysterio has the most number of championship reigns in this division as of 2024.
  • Rey Mysterio has also appeared in a commercial for Surge soft drinks with the WWE wrestler Bill Goldberg.
  • Mysterio once refused to drop the WWE Intercontinental Champion to then-rising star Dolph Ziggler. WWE wanted to put Ziggler over, but Mysterio refused as he was promised a longer title run. Thus, their 2009 feud ended with Mysterio retaining the title.
  • Rey Mysterio consumes alcohol, especially beer, occasionally.
