Controversy | Conviction in Coalgate [4]Business Standard [5]Hindustan Times On 13 July 2023, a Delhi court convicted Vijay Darda and former coal secretary H.C. Gupta, along with five others, in a coal block scam case in Chhattisgarh. The court found them guilty of criminal conspiracy and cheating under Sections 120-B and 420 of the IPC and under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case was reopened in 2014 after rejecting the CBI's closure report. Vijay Darda, the chairperson of the Lokmat Group, was accused of misrepresenting facts in letters to the then Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to secure a coal block for JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd. The 35th Screening Committee had allocated the coal block to the company. Devender Darda, K.S. Kropha, K.C. Samria, JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd, and its Director Manoj Kumar Jayaswal were also convicted. This marked the 13th conviction in the coal scam, which caused controversy during the UPA-II government. The CAG had criticized the government for the inefficient allocation of 194 coal blocks, estimating a loss of Rs 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer. The Court sentenced him and his son to four years jailtime on 26 July 2023. |

- Vijay Darda is an Indian politician, businessman, journalist, author, and philanthropist. He has served as the chairman of Lokmat Media Group. He has been a three-time Rajya Sabha member. He has also been involved with various social work organizations. In July 2023, he was convicted of corruption in the Coalgate scam and sentenced to four years in jail.

- On 15 December 1971, Vijay Darda assumed the leadership of the Marathi Newspaper Lokmat. With his vision, he successfully introduced Lokmat English and Lokmat Hindi newspapers.
